Trying to troubleshoot my Ranger. It shut itself down when I was using it yesterday. I was running my plasma cutter off the machine when it just shut itself down. I tested the plasma on another generator and it worked fine after the shutdown.1) It will restart and run for about 5 seconds now. It will go to low idle, then kick itself to high and then stall. Can restart and do this over and over.2) If I unhook the leads at the slip rings/brushes it will run longer, I can switch it back and forth from low idle to high idle. With my meter on VDC and connected to the dangling brush leads they will start out at 14-15 VDC then begin reducing, kind of like a countdown.3) With slip ring/brush leads connected, I get around 4.5 VDC, machine runs for about 5 seconds then shuts down.4) At the bridge rectifier, if I disconnect 7 and 9 and start the machine I get around 14-15 VAC on the leads coming from the stator (7 and 8). Machine will run for a bit then shut down.5) At the bridge rectifier with all leads connected, I get .450 VAC on 7 and 9, machine will run for 5ish seconds then shuts down.6) With everything connected I get around 14 VAC at the 120v outlet plugs, 28VAC at the 240v plug, so about 14 VAC per leg.7) Checked resistance between the slip rings, it was 4 ohms like it should be.Is my stator done for? Or is it the bridge rectifier that went out? The #7 terminal at the bridge rectifier had gotten warm, maybe a high resistance connection, I put a new terminal on the wire and no change. I don't have a service manual for the 275, I found ones for the Ranger 8 and Ranger 250 I have been referencing and both seem to follow the same troubleshooting path. It would seem that since I'm not getting the 36-43 VAC out of the stator for 7/9 that's where the issue lies?Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Reply:All there is, is the owner's manual . no service manual published yet.So check them oil pressure switch, make sure it closes when engine is started.Switch could be bad or oil is low. Then check the bridge diode and make sure it is not open or shorted. Check slip rings and make sure not shorted to ground (frame)The 14 volts at the brushes during start is battery voltage. Flashes the rotor to make it start working and the stator to build voltage. Then AC power from 7 and 9 is applied to the bridge diode. DC power from the bridge diode then goes to the brushes. This causes the stator to produce full output. Couldn't tell from owner's manual if this welder has a low fuel sensor or a 60HZ sensor. With wires disconnected from the brushes, stator will not produce much output. If engine doesn't stay running, check fuel supply, Pump, solenoid in carb.Recheck oil pressure switch. Get engine running then go back and check welder.You can always call Lincoln tech support and get a little help.when working 7&9 are 42vac and bridge puts out about 50vdc.
Reply:Thanks for the response. The engine is running/will run fine, I did bypass the oil pressure switch to make sure that wasn't the issue. With the brush leads disconnected and a multi-meter hooked to the leads, the engine will run until the voltage at the leads gets to about 7 VDC, then it shuts the engine down. I assume its something on the board that expects to see a certain voltage or else.I ordered a new bridge diode/rectifier, after the last check it felt extremely warm so hoping that's the issue, there is a short or something within that. I tried to 'flash' the stator with a 12V battery, figured wtf, and it seemed to kick on for a moment, I got some good AC at 7 and 9, then it kicked back down. Once the new part gets here I'll see what happens.
Reply:As a follow up, the bridge rectifier/diode was the fix. Ordered a few off Digi-key for about 5 bucks each to have a few spares. The new one still does get warm, but not hot like the other one did when it was failing. Hooked it up, fired it up and was back in business. Burned about 10 rods and good to go. A $5 part.

Reply:HosFabI have traded for a Ranger 250 that is producing 34 VAC and will not strike an arc at all. The engine runs fine but very little VAC and no welding power at all in AC or DCYour post is helpful.Thanks,Tom |
