I find that the mig wire I use eats side cutters too rapidly.  This must be some pretty hard stuff.  I think I need to step up and spend some bucks to get some quality cutters.  I've been looking at this.https://www.amazon.com/High-Leverage.../dp/B0000302WRAnybody have any favorites? Thanks,  Billk
Reply:Whatever works..... I never had a problem with regular mig plyers.... but I don't really cut the wire very often...  why are you cutting so much wire?Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:They sell regular MIG pliers at Tractor Supply,  Home Dept,  Harbor Freight, Lowes any weld supply store and just about any hardware store. They got and end you can clean the nozzle with, side cutters for clippin the wire off, and a place on em you can take the nozzle of without burning your hand up..very handy and they wont break your wallet
Reply:I own a set of Harbor Freight mig pliers and they suck. They are dull and don't cut the wire. I also have a pair of Master Force (from Menads) mig pliers and they are much better. I once read that the HF ones were hit and miss. Sometimes you get a good pair and sometimes you don't.
Reply:I use the " code blue" channelock mig pliers. They hold up really well. The original made in japan, " welpers" were really good but I haven't seen them in years.

Reply:Good quality mig pliers .   This is a situation where it is nice to have a multi-use tool rather than a dedicated cutter."AaaaWelpers" add made by Anchor now.

Reply:Inherited a couple pair of Klein's from dad, still sharp 50+ years  of use.One pair did have a  chip  on the end of the tip- but no dulling- not sure what  paw was trying to cut when that happened.  Cutting MIG wire is no problem at all  Look the same as what Flatbill is looking at in post 1  except the "soft grips" are long gone on mine   They are definitely my  Favorite's  and "Go To"  cutters when i know a lesser pair won't cut it.Last edited by 455dan; 12-26-2020 at 07:14 PM.1962 Idealarc Tig  300 300 1974 Idealarc Tig  300 300  ( till owner needs it back) 1988 Power Mig 150 (.112 f cap mod) 2015  Lotos Ltpdc2000d plasma/arc/tig    Victor 100 torch, 200- 210 Oxy/Acet gauges

Reply:Like most everybody said, mig pliers should do the job fine and do a lot of other things you need for mig welding. But, I have a pair of Kleins like in your link and I can guarantee you they'll cut mig wire and just about anything else that will go into the jaws.

Reply:My biggest complaint with "mig pliers " is that they are useless for gripping a hot piece of metal. They don't have the same clamping capabilities as normal pliers.   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk:

IF I use mig pliers I always cut the wire at the highest angle as possible to minimize end distortion.... seems to work on the bigger wires anyways

Reply:I've been using my cutter I got from HF for about 9 years with no problems. Cut .035" wire and pick up most anything within reason.'Guess they don't make em like they used to.

Reply:I buy very little from HF. All my vice grips are made by Vice Grips in America. Just all my tools are America made like Klein. Dave

Reply:I did a quick and dirty unscientific review of the mig pliers I have on hand. Pictures tell the story...

Because of their design none of the above tools will adequately grip anything over 1/16" thick.

For regular side cutters (NOT mig pliers) I like using my Channell Locks

Or for ease of cutting, compound action pliers such as this Snap-on would be best**best only used in the sense of what I have and used.

Reply:If he is cutting stainless steel wire all day, then I could see there is no solution that stuff will ruin the edge on any cutter. I did a big job in Manhattan, I had to MIG stainless steel round duct together, a stupid job it should have been TIG welded. I could have stick welded the thin wall pipe better but things are what they are specced for. By the time I made cut number 20 with a good set of side dikes, it was not a clean cut. Sincerely, William McCormickIf I wasn't so.....crazy, I wouldn't try to act normal, and you would be afraid.
Reply:The pliers look price for a hobby welder. Most working welder I have known just use old side cutters and smash the wire off. Dave

Reply:Buy a cheap set of MIG pliers, and throw them away when they don't cut good.  Not really a big decision.  Pliers are disposable.  If you don't wear them out, you lose them.   I had a really nice set of linesman's pliers, and I can't tell ya where I dropped/misplaced/lost them.  The only thing ya really don't lose is the important stuff.  I've never lost K'kins, but I've misplaced her a time or two

Reply:Just out of curiosity I wire wheeled the rusty old pair I use and can't find a name on them. Cutting .023 and .030 with them for about 15 yrs doesn't seem to have caused any wear on the cutting edges. So I guess a no name pair is good to have. That brings up a valid question: why are all pliers called a "pair"?? They're one unit not two of each. I guess the kind that have a nut on the hinge pin could be disassembled and the you'd have a "pair", LOL!!Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
