It was a lazy Sunday morning and I needed something simple so I decided to change the oil in the compressor. My Ingersol/Rand upright has the drain plug in a usual sort of inconvenient position so I decided I needed to make a special funnel to catch the mess. I cut up an old anti-freeze container and came up with this. It uses 2 one inch bolts as locaters on existing holes on the compressor. The wire wraps on the air inlet to take the weight of the used oil.

A little clear silicone forms a trough to direct the oil away from the compressor pump.

Original plan was to keep using I/R original synthetic oil, but at $152 Cdn for a 5 liter jug, wasn't happening. Got some Milton non-synthetic at $49/gallon. On my old portable I just used 10-30 motor oil and changed it more often. Might be going back to that soon.

And there she is, all buttoned up and nice and clean...

Reply:Ooh.  Tidy

You don’t want this stuff

Check the invoice...

That was for this unit

Reply:For stuff like compressors and small engines I like to use a vacuum evacuator and just suck the oil out, I have on of those 3 gallon "Vacula" extractors and like the lack of mess.

If that's a 20 liter pail, it's $26/liter. We're paying a way too much up here..... area code is for Oregon... https://www.pacificaircompressors.co...ompressor-oil/

Reply:lol....nope, I'll just keep the funnel in the doghouse. I thought about doing that before, and it would work ok on this one, but on the portable I was afraid of it getting broken off and dropping the oil. My John Deere garden tractors have gone to that, but with the temperature changes they have a habit of coming loose. With that f'n Chinese pump on my "American " built compressor, I'm not sure if that would require a metric fitting? It took a 10 mm wrench...Last edited by whtbaron; 09-27-2020 at 03:14 PM.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:So does that just use a venturi off the air line to create the suction?  Seems rude to ask, but how hard does she suck??250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:Probes... sounds unpleasantly alien to me.... but for small engines and compressors I can see something like Ronsi posted with a metal tank. Problem with my old compressor is that the inlet hole is so small (obviously a virgin ) that those probes wouldn't fit in there... not even with lubrication.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:If you're worried about breaking a nipple off on the air compressor drain you can use a piece of hydraulic hose with a cap on it.   That's what's on a lot of the heavy equipment I work on.

Reply:Nice looking  compressor.  Did  you buy it new?   What would the  CFM  be with that model?               Thanks
Reply:Thanks... I'm happy with it. I bought it on sale about 3 yrs ago for around $1600 Cdn. It's an 80 gallon, 2 stage, 5 HP that's rated 15.8 CFM @ 90 psi, but comes preset at 175. Most of my drops are set around 130 to 150 with 2 moisture collection points as well as filtered regulators at each drop. Moisture in the lines has not been an issue. I had some electrician issues getting my new shop wired, so it's really only been in full use for less than a year. I watched the ads for a few years hoping to find a nice used one for cheap, but even at farm auctions they seemed to go for 80% of new, which didn't make much sense to me.Last edited by whtbaron; 09-28-2020 at 08:52 PM.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:I’ve never been to a farm auction.   Only Ritchie Bros NON Ag auctions and that must have been 35 years ago.

Reply:I been to a few farm auctions around these part a number of years ago... it was insane what people were paying for stuff!!! I mean they were paying 90 percent of what the stuff would be at the store

... and the store stuff is brand new!!!! every once in a while something would go cheap or what I thought was cheap... but maybe it had things wrong with it I didn't catch???  I did get a ~1-1/2 yard JD loader bucket for 75 bux once

had a broke cutting edge from someone ramming something immovable with the bucket tilted all the way forward but the bucket was in extremely good shape other than that!!!

Reply:I don't mess with any fancy drain methods.I just open 'er up, and let the oil run all over the floor. The dog licks it all up.Then comes in the house, and pukes all over the carpet.I call that recycling

Reply:I used to think Yukon was a bad hunter... I've since learned he's just a picky eater. Loves rabbits and raccoons... very rare, as opposed to well done. He doesn't touch anything I spill, and I've taught him to walk away when I'm welding. That's a plus.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
