I am looking for a plasma cutter to do cutting and gouging on cold rolled steel between 12 and 20 gauge in thickness. I am doing auto restoration and fabrication (Hobby in my garage) removing weld seams and spot welds as well as cutting out rust and fabbing new panels. Would the 30XP be a good fit for this on thin sheet? I really like the fine cut and hyaccess consumables as well as the support of the product. Thus my choice to look at Hypertherm over much cheaper products.

Reply:Here is a link to gouging out spot welds with a Powermax45 using the standard cutting consumables for a Powermax30....you can scroll down to the spot weld video once you are on the linked location. You can use the same technique with a Powermax30XP.....I would suggest using the standard shielded consumables. It takes a little technique....but once you do a few practice runs your can remove the weld without damaging the second layer. There are gouging parts for the 30XP.....they would probably work better for removing automotive spot welds. The video is of Joann Bortles in Jim Colts shop in NH! Joann is a well known motorcycle and automotive customizer / painter......that just happens to like plasma cutting!Jim Colt   HyperthermLink:  http://www.hypertherm.com/en-us/Prod...ry/Automotive/And a pic of the Hyaccess 30XP cutting and gouging consumables:

Reply:must say, Looks good in the video. I've only used mine to gouge off heavy stuff...  like rivets for spring shackles etc.    works great.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:Yes.....for virtually anything automotive the 30XP is the best choice. The 45 has more power.....but the 30XP will prove to have better finesse!  And...it is dual voltage....has Finecut consumables for better quality and narrower kerf on the thinnest materials.Jim Colt   Hypertherm
Reply:Jim, Thanks for the help. I ordered the 30 XP this morning with the HyAccess consumable kit and some additional Finecut consumables.
Reply:The 30xp arrived this afternoon and I did some quick tests on 16-20 gauge sheet with the fine cut tip. All I can say is wow! This is so much faster and precise compared to a nibbler or snips. This will get heavy use fabbing and replacing body panels for my project car. I will do some gouging tests with the hyaccess kit this weekend on some frame section welds and 18 gauge panels with spot welds. This little machine is exactly what I was hoping it would be.
Reply:Jim,Hate to dig up an old thread, but it is relevant to my researching a Plasma cutter.I am looking for a plasma cutter for my home shop, I mostly work on/restore unibody type cars/jeeps, with some occasional fabbing of brackets, etc. about 50/50 body work/fabbingThe body work is all 16-20 gauge, INCLUDING the removal of spot welds. The fabbing is 90% 1/8" tube, angle, etc,, with the very occasional 3/16 - 1/4"I would want something very portable to move the side/area of the car I am working on or to the welding table. And 110v would be a BIG plus as dragging the heavy 220 ext cord around for cutting 18 gauge would get old.Let me repeat, removal of spot welds is important,, I DESPISE drilling spot welds.I see you are mentioning (below) that the 30XP is capable of gouging a single layer of spot welds? Where I have read other times you have said it wont??What are your thoughts on the 30XP for my needs??Nick

Reply:The 30XP can do precision gouging and remove spot welds with a bit of practice.  Here is a link to the process and a video.  https://www.hypertherm.com/en-US/lea...-weld-removal/   The 30XP does not really have enough power to do much with gouging out weld beads, etc. It can be done, but slowly!  For heavy duty gouging I would recommend a Powermax65 or larger, for spot weld removal the 30XP is best.   Jim Colt   Hypertherm
Reply:Jim,thanks for the response. This would be strictly removing spot welds in 16-20 gauge sheet metal (uni-body cars)Thanks,Nick
