Harbor Freight wheel jack

Going to get one to try it out for putting those heavy truck wheels and tires on. Will use my Labor Day 25% off coupon and hopefully they don't consider it a floor jack as the coupon doesn't work on floor jacks. Reply:That goes under the tire and only jacks up a little bit to get the tire off the ground so you can push the vehicle in a corner or something. So how are you going to use that to put tires on?Oh ok just thougt about it. You're going to use another jack to raise the vehicle and use that jack to position the tire to the lugs. Back where I come from we use a pry bar about this  long which is alot cheaper than $99. Do you change tires that much you need one of those?Last edited by jfh; 08-31-2019 at 10:36 PM.
Reply:I used a floor jack to handle the tires/wheels for the ambulances, we ran an all steel belted tire & they  weighed almost 60 lbs without the wheels & they were steel, it didn't take me long to figure out that I didn't want to make a career of manhandling those things. Reply:I haven't tried this jack version but we did buy a bunch of the HF wheel dollies. They're all too flimsy to hold a decent sized America car and they all collapsed. Some didn't collapse until we tried the move the car but others collapsed as soon as we put weight on them.  That's pretty much what I found with most things from HF, it's all too small or too weak to be useful.

Reply:I haven't used that one, but have used them before for their intended purpose.  They work pretty well, just gotta push on a solid spot (no denting) to get moving.  So I think they'd be no problem for tires/wheels - no sheet metal to bend and plenty of places to grab.  At most it might be a slight nuisance getting the lugs to line up spot on vertically.  But you might find that enough reason to pass on them.Last edited by Weldalittle; 09-01-2019 at 07:48 PM.
Reply:Did not buy it, I didn't really understand how they worked, by pinching in on the wheel and only raising it slightly off the ground. I can see where they would be useful as intended with four, on very light vehicles, but to raise a tire into position not so much. When I work on my Superduty or my 3500 doing brakes etc those heavy wheels always get me. I think I will fab up a cradle to fit the small floor jack. I have used a bar but it doesn't work real good when you lift the vehicle a foot or so. Reply:There's at least twenty different brands(mostly chinese) of wheel dollies out there that could easily be copied by the average welder




Reply:I would also go with a wheel dolly, or atv/transmission jack or hydraulic lift table depending on how heavy the tire is.  Can't beat the wheel dolly though for convenience and speed unless they are REALLY heavy tires.  Those wheel dollys are great though for moving your car or equipment with big enough tires around tight spaces.

Reply:I was thinking the HF motorcycle lift that looks like a small duct jack would work nicely with a bit of modification.
Reply:Ronsii has a good idea. Thinking about those types of things, I have taken the round part (the part that contacts the vehicle) off my jack before and inserted a self fabricated gas tank holder into the hole to raise and lower gas tanks with my jack. You may be able to make something with 2 forks that will bolt down in the jack hole without having to buy a bunch of stuff. If you do it that way, it is made in the USA.

Reply:How about fabricating a fork, something like a set of forklift forks, that replaces the arm extension for a HF shop crane - cherrypicker? (And use the crane at a right angle to the vehicle).This would give height adjustment, and considerable height, as well as allowing you to carry the tire out of the way.HF MIG-180 with all the mods.Grizzly H8153 Stick/Tig Pulse 130/160.Wards PowrKraft AC-230. Reply:I don't know about you guys but most of the tire work I do ends up being outdoors on very uneven ground and usually not ideal conditions for any kind of small wheeled device with a load to roll.... and the few jobs I do indoors on a flat pad would not have enough room for a shop crane and attachment to come at it from the side... there's only two reasons I can think of that I don't have one of the wheel dollies I picced earlier in the thread... 1.I am too cheap to buy something that easy to make and 2.I just haven't gotten aggravated enough lifting tires with a bar/star to force myself to build a dolly just for that purpose  


Reply:I use the same floor jack I use to lift my truck to lift the tires into position when I'm ready to remount one. I get the truck up and on a jack stand to remove the tire. Then, when it's time to remount the tire I roll it onto the floor jack and line it up with the lug nuts. Works perfect. They're cheap enough that you could have one dedicated to tire duty.
