the story is great if it were to be true?? is there such a shortage of welders?  http://app.bronto.com/t/l?ssid=36362...5oG7cfkR2tqF0k
Reply:it was true. when rosie the riveter made her debut there was a "manpower" shortage in many trades. i doubt it's true to that extent today.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Historically, and today women make great weldors. They are especially good at delicate, precise shop work that takes feel, dexterity, and attention to detail.Up 20 stories on a steel building frame attempting really heavy and dangerous stuff in the weather is impossible for most of them, and that is understandable. This gender stuff is no problem for me in the workplace as long as everyone there is there because they love welding...But if men or women enter a job skill to "prove" they can do it as well as the other sex, they got issues they need to resolve somewhere else.
Reply:With the power aids available - so workers are not lifting heavy loads. There is no field that is unavailable to either gender!"Women" won't save welding. Young folks of all sexes, colors, creeds, etc. will have to be trained for when us old farts decide we've had enough of squatting down in the mud or squirm between boiler pipes.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:Certainly in Australia and England it was true back in WW2, women took over most of the welding, fitting and mechanic type trades - big issue at the end of the war, when all the men came home and wanted their jobs back! The women were not so keen to going back to doing the washing and cooking after 6 years in the workforce!Lots of physical trades with shortages these days, eg - almost impossible to find a brick layer here under 50, and it is not an old mans trade! (backs have usually had it by 40)Kids want to go to university and get high falutin office jobs these days, not interested in a bit of hard graft.Last edited by jackdawg; 04-30-2016 at 05:29 AM.

Reply:we have plenty of females in our uniformed staff but none in the maint dept. we had one female welder that came from the brooklyn navy yard but she took ill and passed away. we had an oiler who came from the military and she retired. i worked with a female welder long ago on a federal housing project and she cried when it was lay off time. i ran into her years later at the labor day parade and she was working with the ironworkers.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:There is an EXCELLENT documentary about how women workers were treated by the company owners during and after the war.In one video, the big company honcho is addressing the female workforce about how the men are coming home and they will soon be laid off and expected to return home and take care of the men again as housewives and mothers. The documentary interviews several old women that worked then and how their man was killed in the war and they were still booted out of their job to starve and/or become homeless.I watched it on Amazon prime 6 months ago..I'll see if I can find it.

Reply:Certainly no shortage of welders. There's only a shortage of welders that are willing to work for $10 an hour. I think the industry  created a bit of a myth that we needed more welders so we could import foreigners to work for 10 bucks an hour. Women make fine welders, it's a lot like sewing

Reply:My wife's grandmother was a Rosie the riveter, never did know exactly what she built. My grandpa built B17's during the WWII and later served in a construction unit with the Army as a welder.  He told me he was taught to weld oxy-acetylene by an old woman and she could run a 7018 uphill like he'd never seen before.

It sure seems someone that brings those skills to the table would earn a little more right off the bat than those wages.https://nashville.craigslist.org/trd/5557816916.htmlWelding is definitely a lot like sewing in that we spend considerably more time prepping than we actually do sewing.--I think minority quotas have done more damage than good. Beyond that, I think it's wrong to lower military standards or firefighting standards or any other standards for the sole purpose of being able to hire more women. There are good reasons why standards were originally set and safety comes to mind. Either we're qualified.... or we're not for our sake and that of co-workers.--In the greater Chicagoland area I believe there actually may be a shortage of weldors, stone masons, and..... butchers. Those professions seem to be the three I'm always seeing hiring signs for along the roads and tacked to boards at grocery and hardware stores. --I can honestly say I'd have an enviable mound of steel scrap “goodies” and drops to play with if I had $5 for every time someone found out I welded and tried to hire me on the spot. That tells me there truly is a shortage of skilled welding professionals in my area and/or there are a lot of employers in desperate need of minorities to satiate hiring quotas because.... I'm older.... the gray in my hair ISN'T an expensive frosting from a salon and I haven't been able to lift more than 50# in years yet.... I'm still routinely offered work welding from people who don't  seem to care how limited my skill-set is>>>>?  So much for hiring on the basis of job qualifications!!!  I used to thank them and tell them that I was only an entry level weldor and that they wouldn't want me but was told training could be provided a few times too many so now I simply thank them for their offer while adding that I'm just not interested in working at this phase in my life. --For what it’s worth, I’ve been offered $15 to $18 an hour plus benefits if I’ll start and I’m a MIG weldor not even a TIG or a stick weldor. Oh... and I'm not even a certified MIG weldor. Sad....MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Notsooldordum> "The white in my beard is frosting from the cupcake I ate." Ha ha ha... mine's from old age!!!--I’ve got a girlfriend who is in the union. She worked her way up the ranks from apprentice to superintendent... I know she reads blueprints like your son does. She's in her 50's and runs a tight ship from what I've been told.  Another girlfriend of mine has a daughter who is a weldor. She's in her 30's and attended a vocational school to get certified. I think she reads blueprints… not sure. Both women.... like your son... are qualified for the positions they hold, very hard workers, well respected, and must do a great job earning their keep or they wouldn't still be employed... both are with the same employers they started with many years ago so add loyal to their list of pluses. I'm not saying I wasn't well educated, dedicated, and hard working when I worked in an entirely different profession... I'm just saying I'm in my "golden years" and lack the appropriate education, experience, and physical wherewithal that your son has to be worth more than minimum wage to anyone as a weldor.  --Employers have GOT to be hard up for women weldors to fill minority quotas around here. There's no other plausible explanation I can come up with that would prompt employers to expose themselves to the liability associated with hiring someone like me as a weldor who isn’t qualified and can’t meet the physical demands of the welding positions I’ve been offered.  A receptionist position in their front office I could understand…. --It was Brazin who stated he was a “firm believer in hiring the best human for the job…” I agree.  Too bad so many employers apparently aren’t in a position where they can hire the best human due to minority quotas.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:My weldor/weldors have been helped by this book. It is very methodical and has a small section for welding to compliment the mechanical sections. Cheap too, $12 used on ebay.

Reply:I've been welding on and off for the last 19 years. Things I have been through.. oi.Got a job interview at a shop one day. The whole thing was scheduled over email, no one called me. I show up and the woman that ran the office was an older eastern european  thing and the first words out of her mouth was "I didn't know *Grunttruck* was a girls name! I wouldn't have brought you in because this is a man's job!" She said this after telling me I had a very impressive resume in an email.Next, a tig welding position. The ad said $25 an hour. The foreman liked me and offered me a job on the spot. For $12 an hour. I pointed out that the ad was for $25. He said that that position was already filled and if I wanted a job, I had to accept $12. Nope. They continued to refresh that ad every couple weeks, still looking for a welder for $25 an hour.Another job, the shop charge hand, who was newly divorced  and had a serious chip on his shoulder, gradually removed my ability to do things, like operate the overhead crane and forklift, claiming I wasn't certified to use them. And yet, half the shop wasn't certified, but they were able to use them no problem. The company also brought in instructors to certify them, but excluded me from the courses. The reason for this was, he claimed, he would have to pay me overtime to do the training. They had no problem paying the guys said overtime. I had to start asking people to do things for me and that pissed off the foreman. I said I can't do my job with my hands tied behind my back like this, and his response was "We'll find someone else that can." and I was fired on the spot.Given a chance, I can do the job just like any guy. Think about it, you don't weld with your *****. So I shouldn't be expected to weld with my vagina.

Reply:There are still plenty of old fashioned employers.  Hearing-impaired folks have a time time simply getting through the front desk or the "human resources"/white collar boss... If we can get on the shop floor and do adequate on a weld test that really helps the situation.
Reply:You said bankrupt them.  That's what clever companies like that do when surd .  File bankruptcy and for a new business name.  The most pain they will feel is from lawyer fees

Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:I'm in Canada and took the last employer to the Human Rights Tribunal. But the lawyer that was representing me convinced me to drop the case. The foreman had paid off a lot of people in the shop to write up some insane dispositions, saying things like I put a beam through a wall, dropped a beam on someone, crashed a forklift into the side of a building and punched out the painter. None of these things happened, but because no one was willing to stick their necks out for me, I couldn't disprove it. My friends at that place were afraid to speak up as they didn't want to lose their jobs. My lawyer told me that even if I did win, I would be committing career suicide. I eventually dropped the case.On a plus side, Karma had a bit of fun with them. Everyone that wrote depositions were fired, the foreman got into a car accident that left him paralyzed and the charge hand's new wife left him.
