Tennis shoes and welding/cutting, not so smart.

OK, I dont know how many times I have been told about proper footwear. This is what happens with hot slag from a cutting torch. Luckily no burn but I did learn how to do the Two-step real quick.

Reply:Don't feel too bad, just learn from it.I once took a welding class, years before I became a welder.  At the end of the first stick-welding class, I stood up off my stool and set my foot down in the water bucket I'd been cooling my steel in all class long.  I had my old leather farm boots on, complete with worn-through holes around the steel toe.It was an early lesson in paying attention to my surroundings and wearing the proper gear.

Reply:I'm very green to welding - had a friend who let me put down a small bead with his equipment and I was hooked and determined to teach myself more.  I picked up an AD helmet, (cheap) leather gloves, leather apron and leather welding sleeves.  I plan to do nothing more than low amp stick welding.  How concerned do I need to be about what I wear higher than my elbows?
Reply:undercut, you'll need to be somewhat worried.  You'll still get some splatter even if you aren't doing overhead welding.  You also need to protect your skin from UV exposure.  A good long sleeve cotton shirt is probably enough (might get away with short sleeves if your using the leather sleeves).  Make sure your helmet covers your neck where your shirt doesn't.You may find the leather sleeves to be too hot and constrictive.  I rarely wear my leather jacket.  I just go with a good long sleeve shirt.If I'm crawling around in odd positions I'll add a hat (keeps my hair from getting burned) and ear plugs (keeps the hot berries out).I have duct taped shop rags to the top/back of my helmet before.  It helps keep stuff off of your head, or helps block reflections if you have the sun at your back.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

I worked years ago in a shop that built car haulers. The tractor trailer kind that hauls 8-12 cars. It was in the summer and damn hot. I wore leather sleeves. Once you got them good and sweaty inside you could take them off and hang them in front of a big fan and let them cool off. They would stay cool for a while once the wet insde got good and cool. It would last for a while then let hang in front of the fan again the next break.

Reply:speaking from personal experience; besides running the risk of burns and infection from welding in sneakers when you finally come to your senses and realize it's not the smartest career move your work boots will weigh a ton in comparison until you get used to them again.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:That looks painful!  I had a buddy wearing a leather halfjacket, split apron with leg ties, with levis on, working on his back.  A huge glob got under his apron at the hip, burned through his jeans/boxers, and rolled down to about an 1/8" away from his family jewels before it finally stuck and third degree burned him before he could get it off.  He said literally every nurse and doctor available in the ER came to have a look, And he let many of them take non identifying pics of it to show their friends lol.  That haunts me to this day, but it goes to show things can go bad even when properly PPE'd

Reply:I’m a stickler for proper eyewear but I am bad about proper footwear.  I appreciate y’all sharing this info.  I’ve shared it with my son and we will both be wearing appropriate PPE for our feet from now on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Every time I change my socks, I see the scar. Amazing how when plasma cutting, the little VERY hot balls of molten metal can find a way into your shoe.
Reply:You aint a welder if you havent set clothes on fire at some point at least once. Nowadays I find the most frustrating is mig blobs rolling down in the cuff of my glove burning the heck out of my hands. Got some nasty scars because of such. With measuring and fitting gloves on/off its impossible to prevent

Reply:Good see that healing nicely!  You might want to try scar cream (available at even the dollar store) if the scar tissue bothers (itches or is tight for movement) you at all.

Reply:We used to get a gel that was excellent for burns, it was called WATER JEL, IIRC it was saturated in a sterile cloth and kinda felt like boogers. Reply:I burned up the bottom of a bunch of pants before I figured out the best way to prevent it was to tuck em into the boots and wrap the bootlaces around the top of the boots. a month or 2 later I started wrapping the leftover back of the greenie weld jackets around my pants inside the boots and tieing them off, she cuts em into strips and sews the edges. Ive never since I started doing thathave I got a hot one in the foot and haven't burned up the bottom of my britches either, and I do a whole lot ofn very heavy overhead and vertical  welding, cutting gouging and jetarcing in some damn tight places on this equipment. Intrestingly I went to work in a few shipyards over the years when I was traveling, when I was taking the weld tests they made undo this getup saying I would burn up my feet, I tried to tell em they were full of ****, but they insisted. So I complied, guess what 2nd day in yard I get a hot one and burned up the britches at the bottom, after that all bets are off and Popeye is gonna take care of himself.  Damn safety cops think they know it all
Reply:Pretty much all my sneakers have little tiny holes in the top...lol  but dont step on a 1/2 nut you just burned off ...

Reply:I find it odd when men wear anything but proper work boots. Sneakers are for sports or lounging around the house and nothing else unless you hate your own feet.  I don't run a cutting torch with my feet beneath the cut either. Light spatter bounces off leather engineer boots while it melts plastic athletic shoes.
Reply:Welders have different challenges on the job site, facing sparks, fireplace and very hot materials. Tennis shoes aren't a good option for welding. To prevent workplace accidents and mishaps workers have to follow some safety measures. To prevent injuries in the workplace, workers have to wear boots in place of tennis shoes. These boots offer better protection from falling objects than tennis shoes. Boots with reinforced toes are more important to stay safe in these kinds of jobs. Well, you can also protect yourself by wearing resistant clothing, safety glasses, gloves, and helmet. Moreover, you can also make your workplace safer by welding curtains.
