Consequences due to lack of penetration because of inexperience welders.

A couple of months ago we had some high wind gust and it literally blew down a 50ft hanger door. Luckily there was nobody close to the door at the time or people could have been killed. Below are some pictures of the door laying on the hangar floor and the quality of welds on the door including the welds that had virtually no penetration and they broke and caused the entire door to buckle and fall. Some of the welds apparently were so bad that they ground a lot of them down.

Reply:Looks like it was some of that hi-speed welding again, that's what the low bidders have to do when they realize their bid was about half what it's actually gonna cost them to do the job.***********************CR
Reply:Some of those look like repair welds done long after the initial construction.... could be the initial welds were bad anyways but whoever did the repair obviously did not know how to do it even close to right.

They either wore clear through to the edge over a period of time or tore out all at once. Who knows. Reply:^^ Probably more true than anyone wants to acknowledge....But then again texas sure gets it's share of high winds with really high gusts!!!  about 4 months ago they lost part of the roof at one of the hangars at love field and I think right on a year ago hobby lost a whole hangar!!!

don't think I'd want to be in a hangar around there when a storm blows through!!!

Reply:He cut funding to the FAA!!!!on the other hand look how many hangars are in texas and how many have failed.... still safer than driving a car on the interstate

Reply:So, where do you go from here?  At the very least if it where I, and the building was mine, I would be wanting to check all welds in the building first to see if it is safe to continue use.  Really sad to see this kind of work.  Building department would probably be the first place to look as they would have the permit info and builders info.  Going to take some work for the research.  But for now, management better get hopping and a quick search and repair is in order.  If you are an employee there, bet this will be haunting you wondering what else is going to come apart.  Bob

Reply:looks mostly big joint gap, filled poorly. and of course if you got a 1/4" gap and suppose to put 3/8" fillet weld obviously you need to make weld bigger cause very little strength in the filled gap..you have a small weld and that where the forces get concentrated. aint no different if you got a 1/2" plate and part of the plate is only 1/4" thick so if you bend the plate if bends at the 1/4 to 1/2 transition. and of course if 6010 used on A36 the weld is slightly weaker than the A36 steel. another reason weld needs to be bigger..if weld under sized and there was severe whipping done to fill gap its probably got oxidation and slag inclusions in weld too..and of course if fillet weld only from one side than 1/2 plate would need a .75" fillet weld to match strength and thats assuming no joint gap. if 1/4 gap more like 1" fillet weldLast edited by WNY_TomB; 07-23-2019 at 09:31 AM.

Reply:on every job of any size or especially for a port authority or public utility the first thing i had to do after filling out a tax form was show my welding creds. over the year's i can't count how many times my nyc dob welding license/fire department certificate of fitness and aws d1.1 was copied and filed. this procedure should be sop so if there was any inexperienced welders that can be tied to that door failure they shouldn't be hard to track down. let the lawsuits commence.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:Looks like a design problem with those tabs that broke only welded to the outer flanges of the channel, even with good welds that's a wimpy connection for the amount of force a wind load would put on that door.Last edited by CrookedRoads; 07-28-2019 at 11:28 AM.***********************CR

Reply:The Op said it was a 50 foot door. Viewing the pic, the height looks about 34 foot counting 4 foot joints were the blue insulation stuf is now exposed. That comes out to about 1,700 square feet. That's a bigger footprint than my house. Big pressure differences between outside and inside happen. That's why those buildings flex or have flex joints so the roof can lift and lower with changes. Wind causes pressure changes. Ever see an exterior or interior door slam open or shut real hard?I'm no cwi so I have no comment on the welds.

Reply:Some bad design/detailing too - bending about the longitudinal axis of a weld is not good.

And that bolt would have elongated a bunch to result in that amount of plate prying.

Reply:The "design" (if that garbage actually conformed to print) is clearly negligent, the welding is worse and someone needs jail time.  First week welding students with no prior experience could turn out better welds.  I've seen them do it.  Some of those welds are colder than a tax man's heart. I hope the guy that welded that door didn't also weld the crane hangers
