Hi all,My 2 powcons 400SL haven't been used for more than a year. They used to work properly last time. Today I checked and both fans do come on and one machine is ticking and welding. The other machine appears dead. No ticking sound either. Could this malfunction be repaired at reasonable cost or is it end of story?thanks mauritsLast edited by maurits; 07-10-2016 at 10:59 AM.
Reply:Haven't heard of an SL, is your machine a SM or ST?Could be a control pcb problem, or output filter cap, Large one.Cap you might be able to get, the pcb will have to be repaired. I think arcon is out of control pcbs. You can get owner's manuals from arcon. a local welder repair shop might be able to figure out what is going on. he might have to see both machines if he has not ever worked on a powcon before. Arcon will help some with the powcon welders. Can be contacted by e-mail.
Reply:@ maurits - does the pilot light come on? The rectifier firing ("ticking") for the OCV, about once per second, should occur in SMAW mode when the unit is powered ON and not/not under load. This will only occur if there is not remote hand ampetrol or foot pedal connected to the unit. The "ticking", with the remote controller installed, will only occur when the remote control's contactor is engaged. Figured you knew this, but just let'n you know.Your unit is either a 400SM or 400ST as ccawg stated. You can try Arcon tech support. Note, Arcon purchased the remaining assets of PowCon and will not provide extensive walk-throughs tech consult over the phone. They do, however, stock/sell OEM parts for PowCons.Good luck!Last edited by ManoKai; 08-02-2016 at 04:36 PM.Reason: clarification"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:The filter cap is the large electrolytic across the output. mounted in the middle of the welder.Don't know the why. But if everything tests good you need to look at it.Only seen it a couple of times.
