So I got the MigMax and I gave it a whirl last night. Had a few questions. - My test steel is 1/8th inch steel from Home Depot. When I look at the manual settings it recommends E4 manual setting for 220V and 0.30 wire. Why is the auto setting for 1/8th inch so much higher in terms of voltage? The welds I tried in manual seemed too cold and the ones in auto seemed too hot. Can’t make sense of it. - When in auto setting do I set the wire speed at all or is that bypassed?HFs manuals are not for the uninitiated Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:In the auto mode, ignore your wire speed dial (it is all bypassed). If the welds are too hot, adjust the left knob down to get less heat input. In manual mode, wire speed represents your amps/heat input, voltage controls the weld bead profile (tall, ropey, convex on one end of the spectrum, flat or concave on the other end of the spectrum.). This video will help you set your machine in manual mode.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Thanks! One more question. As the metal gets hotter do I need to turn the voltage down - if I’m welding the same piece for a longer time Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Potentially yes. Well either voltage or more likely wire feed speed. But unless you are welding a small piece of metal, that isn't too likely.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Test welds. So yeah. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:If you are just practicing on coupons, you could always put them in a bucket of water to quench them. Not a normally recommended practice but for test coupons it won't hurt anything. That way you don't need to keep fiddling with your settings. I dunk them every 2-3 beads.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:You really wont need to adjust the settings during welding as you would/should not be making such a long weld.On a real project you will make it a banana in a second if you don't move around the piece.https://m.lincolnelectric.com/es-es/...on-detail.aspxWhen I was learning I just moved on to a separate test piece and let the first one cool down.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
