I was cutting with my oxy/acetylene and the flame blew out, then I heard a hissing by the oxygen tank, went to go check it out and it was leaking around the base of the tank fill thing, then the hose burst right in front of me, why would a regulator fail open, is that common? Reply:What made the flame go out? Hissing scares me as the only time I heard hissing was from a flashback burning in the torch handle. Bad O-ring on the cutting attachment. Luckily I shut both torch valves shut off quickly and the flame went out. Flashback arrestors are a good thing. The diaphragm in your regulator likely failed.
Reply:Flame went out from oxygen pressure being too high, caused by when the regulator failedSent from my moto g power using Tapatalk

Reply:Usually means the regulator seat has failed.  The seat is a small, resilient annular seal in a brass carrier that seals against a brass crown.  If it is a Victor I've had good success rebuilding them with kits from Regulator & Torch Exchange in Loganville, Georgia.
Reply:I've had two oxy regs fail exactly that way. Tiny teflon square oring split allowing cylinder pressure into the hose. I threw away all regs of that brand and bought Harris. Much happier now.

Reply:Good read, thanks for posting.I have three brands of oxy regs some are 20 years old no problems. The offending ones were less than a year old and looked new. I completely disassemble and pack away the set in original box each time It's used on site to take care of them. One blew up on site, the other was on my shop set permanently on the cart. Diaphragm backed off each time, no reason for it to blow. I think it's just a bad design. Aussie brand "Cigweld" was owned by Victor now Esab. Design hasn't changed so no more of them for me.Here's what the oxy hose did to me when it whipped off:

Reply:Yeah, Thats how mine failed. Sent mine out for repair, didn't have time to fiddle with it. It was about 25 30 year old, probably should have them rebuilt every 10 or 15 years. Only took a couple of day to have done at local weld shop, fortunately I could finish the job with plasma cutter. It shouldn't happen too often though. I think there was another thread where someone was wondering why there was a hole in the back of the regulator, and should it be leaking.Be SafeAirco 250 ac/dc Heliwelder Square waveMiller Synchrowave 180 sdMiller Econo Twin HFLincoln 210 MPDayton 225 ac/dcVictor torchesSnap-On YA-212Lotos Cut60D
