In a project I'm doing I have 1 1/4 dom tube that runs through 2 stabilizer plates with a hole to accept the 1 1/4 dom.The first plate is 1/2" and the second is 3/4".My question is when I weld around the dom to fix to plate do I set up the welder for the thinner dom tube or thicker steel plate?any other info that may help me on this would also be apriciated....thanks
Reply:anyone?
Reply:I don't know what process you are using hoever I suggest that you keep your heat/amperage up to ensure fusion into the heavier plate.  It might be a good idea to preheat the 3/4 plate a bit.  If you can tip the weldment up so that the plates are flat it might be a lot easier to run a fillet around.  You then could concentrate your arc on the plate and just tie into the tube as you go around.
Reply:I concur with lotechman,To simplify though, I'd tell you this.  Run your machine settings like you would for if you were welding the thicker section.  So for instance if you were to be welding the 3/4" plate, doesnt matter how thin you go, you set the parameters like if you were welding 3/4 on 3/4.  While you are welding you start out with your puddle on thicker piece,  then you drag that puddle to the thinner piece,  once you get it onto the thinner piece you quickly pull it back tot he thicker, and you weave it like that.  The same is true no matter what the thickness, or anything.  Hope this helps.   CHRIS
Reply:What type of welding process are you using? In the case of tig, setup for the thicker piece of material and angle the cup towards the thicker piece of metal so that you control the heat into the thinner piece.
