hello , i am going to repair front lift arms on cat back hoe they cracked at weld joint at back shaft closet to cab , my question is which will be stronger dc or mig , 032mig wire or 7018 stick
Reply:Technically filler is filler. It's all rated by the same standards. But in this case you'd be better of with stick for several reasons. Initial penetration and fill rate being a couple. 7018 DC is good. Now to the repair. I'm almost sure the front arms aren't cast, but you really need to verify that. One other item is that if they cracked they were either minimally sized to begin with or subject to certain abuse. In either case they will still be undersized or subject to that same abuse. Re-inforcment may be in order.
Reply:hey guy well made repairs to back hoe arms ,no they are steel tube seemed on bottom vee out cracks pretty deep then used mig 251 miller 19.5 amps then plated seem area this is where cracks started.machine used to pack garbage our machines get really abused. thanks .
Reply:Good job. In many cases where ive done repair work like this we do put in a piece of strap welded in to reinforce. Also, I like that you put in a bevel. The mig was fine although I personally would have chosen the 7018 to be honest in my own opinion this is strictly a personal decision. If I can bring the equipment into a shop I usually mig it, provided I have one big enough (right now I have a small 115V). And if I cant bring it into the shop I stick it. There is truth to what Sandy says, however, I still dont think its a huge issue providing you have a grinder and bevel and or clean the joint well. ANyways good luck to ya and sounds like you did waht Id have done.CHRIS |
