I am about to purchase a new welder and I want it to have a tig option. I have been stick welding for thirty years being a very dedicated Jeeper and suffering many broken parts. I had my mind made up on a Miller Syncrowave 180SD. After many hours researching forums on welding I changed my mind many times. Many thought the Lincoln Precision Tig 185 was the way to go, others said Thermal Arc 185. One forum directed me to the HTP Invertig 201. I was contacted by a salesman it sounded so good , could run on chipmunk power while putting out 200amps. Are these inverter machines for real, are they as dependable as transformer machines or is this smoke, mirrors, and snake oil. The people at HTP are great are the machines as good? At one forum someone said TA185's get sold as soon as the warranty expires because it costs so much to fix them. I want a welder to last thirty years as my old buzz box, I want it to tig and stick as good as my ability will let it.Any help would be appreciated that you could give me.        Any help would be appreciated that you could give me.
Reply:Welcome to the forum, josie wales.
Reply:the HTP sounds appealling on other forums and different sights but i don't know about their service/availability on parts! as 4 my .02 i would go blue/red just from previous encounters. oh, by the way welcome  i don't have a spunky username just what it is, me!
Reply:I used the Miller 180 SD. I thought the new water cooler impeller window to show you it's working is a really neat idea. On the bad side we've burnt out a number of thumbcontrols.
Reply:I use a Lincoln Invertec V160-T which is a 160 amp max TIG/130 max stick setup (about 30% duty cycle at those amperages, off the top of my head).  I find it dependable and a relatively low draw on current (although the place I'm in right now is a rental and I'm working on getting my landlady to get her stepdad - a retired electrician - to come and pull a 220V out there so I can really get it cooking, it still does well when running an entire garage off of a single 120V/15A branch). In case anyone wondered, the fact that my entire garage runs on a single 120V/15A is the rationale behind my handle.  And yes, I DO get my maximal output when I turn off all the lights and set up via clip-on LED flashlight.MR
