What is the proper technique on using 6013 rod? The class instructor says you "drag" it across. Another student who is a welder says you go in small circles. which is it?
Reply:From what I have read about 6013 for the most penetration its best to drag the rod.. If I were in your shoes I would listen to the instructor.. The other student who is a "weldor" may or may not know what he is talking about but in the end it is the instructor that you have to please.. By the way I am only a Newby weldor the above is just what I have read..Darryl
Reply:I have seen multiple techniques for any rod, depending on who's welding. I would say do as the intructor says, he is the one who you have to satisfy. MY question is, if the student is a proficient welder why is he taking what I am assuming to be a beginning welding class??? The 6013 is a drag type rod which means you can drag the rod, but I have always used some sort of movement, be it small weave, or figure 8's. Do what ever the instructor says to do. regardless of what you think, because he probably has a reason for teaching that technique. Good luck ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Thanks for the replies. The guy said he was a welder and had LA city cert. He quit welding to start his own landscaping company and let his cert. expire. Now he want to weld again and get certified again.
Reply:This is purely my opinion since i do not know the person in question, but if someone has the skills to have been a certified welder, and only wanted to recertify, I have a hard time believing they would be in an entry level course when they should already know what to do, and only require sometime practicing and take the test. Either way, the main point is listen to your professor, they would not be teaching if they weren't qualified. Hang in there. ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Omega, think about the rods main use. Most times you use 6013 in an ornamental situation and a drag technique is the best or most common. There is a lot of slag with this rod and a weave or circles is best left to those with a bit more experience, which you will get by running stringers for now and learning weaves later.Once you figure out how the rod behaves in different places you'll know where you can use it properly. Then your on your way to filling that vast warehouse of knowledge that you need to have to be a good weldor.........Have fun!!!!
Reply:a 6013 rod is a great all angle shielded metal arc rod, even a great down hill sheet metal rod with a tight arc |
