How to start electric welding...

Hi experts in the field, I am a newbie at welding. I tried welding a couple of times. Everytime, it takes an incredibly long time to get the electrode to burn and weld correctly.Most of the times, I get it stick to the metal.My real question is, when start to weld something. Should the items be heated with fire ? cuz I noticed, the electrode lights up faster when its hot.

Reply:striking it like a match works good for me.. hit it, pull fast, and up.

Reply:just remember to maintain your gap once you created a good arc.  If your not already familiar with keeping your hand planted at a fixed position, try it.  This will help keep correct distance for control.
