I need to weld a 3/16" mild steel plate to .06/.08 wall mild steel tube.  is this doable with a Miller Maxstar STH?  Would preheat be the answer or should I look at using 10ga (.134") plate instead of the 3/16"?
Reply:why not just use the stick side....1/8 6013 will work NICE -bonez
Reply:I haven't tried stick...but I will give that a try!
Reply:When joining two pieces of steel of dissimilar wall thickness, use the amount of current required for the thinner piece.  Stick would work with thin wall tube, but it's the last process that I would use.  I'd recommend TIG, I'm not sure how you intend to do the joint fitup, but assuming that it's a fillet, you'll want to use 65-100 amps, 1/16" tungsten and a 4,5, or 6 cup.-Heath

Reply:You'll get as much penetration on the plate as you will on the tube, which isn't much relative to the thickness of the plate, but it's all that's needed given the strength of the tube.-Heath
Reply:Run the amps it takes to burn into the thick piece and then let that molten metal wet into the thin piece.  I'd suggest you also have an experienced welder show you how this is done. When you drove your first car, was there some human instruction ?

Reply:I'd go with metalsculptor.  In my opinion he is right.  I'm no expert but I do weld everyday for the last 10+ years.  Maybe I am an expert then...?  whatever,  if I were doing it thats the way I'd go about it.
