I was thinking, isint a welder, a welder. I have a lincoln mig pak 10 and i was wondering if i took a tig torch or a stick torch and hook it up to the + and -, would i be able to use it with out recking my machine?
Reply:Sounds like a good idea, but it won't work. There are others that can give a much better explanation, but a Mig machine is designed to provide constant voltage (variable current as you weld), whereas a Tig or stick machine is constant current (variable voltage as you weld). When I say these vary as you weld, it's due to the variables such as arc gap, material, angles, etc, etc. Some welders are capable of doing it, some of the inverters can be set up for all three processes, as well as some of the larger engine driven welders. In those cases though, you still have to add the appropriate 'accessories' to do what you want. A lot of them do have HF built in either, so an add on box is needed for that. (Tig is scratch start without it, and it's needed for aluminum.) Occasionally you'll hear of used machines like this that are DC only as well, AC isn't an option.
Reply:o, o well i guess, but that would be awsome, but is there a way i can set my welder up so it uses 32 volts instead of just 24, you know so that the arc proformance is good?

Reply:I actually owned an Olds Delta 88 with a diesel conversion engine, but it was not a good car.There are some wire feeder power supplies that do both CC and CV (they are generally called Multi-Process machines). Some of these are mig, tig, stick machines, but they aint cheap, not even close to what your machine costs. And, they don't generally come with all the components necessary to do all these processes. For example you would have to get a wire feeder to go with it. The most inexpensive ones start in the $2.5k range and shoot straight up from there. They are even high well used. If you had a decent cheap (and there are some) ac/dc stick welder, you can get a used cc/cv suitcase wire feeder and a cheap hi-freq box, and argon to add both mig and tig. I hate to sound discouraging, but if you are starting with a mig machine, I think you dont want to even try.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:The Lincoln Mig-Pak 10 is a simple, small transformer-based CV power supply. Converting it to CC would require different regulation circuitry. I'm not even sure how it is regulated, but I believe it's tapped, in which case I think that would make it pretty difficult to convert. It could be done with enough effort, but it would require expertise to do so. A person with that expertise could just as easily build their own CC power supply from scratch.If you want a project and a cheap CC power supply then get yourself an AC buzz box. I've seen 'em around here on craigslist for as little as $50. From that point it's a relatively simple matter to add a bridge rectifier and a little filtering capacitance. With the right internal switching, you'll have yourself a constant-current AC/DC power supply, it'd be good for stick, and might work for TIG, but it'd lack remote capability and a gas solenoid.-Heath
