I just bought a hypertherm 380 and I need to know what type of air filter to buy?  I think I already have an air compressor picked out, but as I understand it - having a good air filter will save you down the line when it comes to getting the most life out of your comsumables.  Any help is appreciated.~whiskeynipper
Reply:Here is a discussion over on the Miller Motorsports board:http://millermotorsports.com/mboard/...ead.php?t=2169 I'm currently using a MotorGard air filter as mentioned there, but am considering stepping up to a refrigerated dryer.  I've seen used 20cfm models for about $600 ~ $700 and wonder what people's thoughts are before making the jump.
Reply:I guess it would depend on how many dollars worth of consumables you go through in a given period.  If you go through $100 worth a month and the dryer increases your consumable life by 25%, you save $25 dollars a month, untill the dryer is paid for and after that you are making money (well, sorta).  If the dryer extends consumable life by more than 25%, the savings add up quicker. If you spend less than $100 per month on consumables, the savings add up slower.  (and vice versa on both, obviously.)I have yet to see any chart from any plasma manufacturer with consumable life and air moisture content.  This would be a big help in making a decision like this.I currently use the black pipe moisture trap and it works nicely compared with the straight air.  I have thought seriously about using an old dorm fridge and a small air tank with an automatic purge for the same purpose.  This could also add beer storage space...which is always a good investment.Last edited by smithboy; 01-04-2006 at 11:25 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Now there's a thought!  The combination beer cooler/air dryer!  You better patent it before I do!
Reply:It's yours for the taking.  I am a Baptist and that kind of stuff is supposed to be consealed from the public.  I only drink under an assumed name...Jonesboy.  OOOOPS!You know the reason we don't sell beer on Sundays in GA?  Because after church, we'd all have to pretend like we didnt recognize each other in the beer store.Last edited by smithboy; 01-04-2006 at 12:16 PM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:LOL @ smithboy.      Im a beer drinker and a preacher's  kid.   ........and I like beer. Also, I've been using the MOTDD 1008 filter found below with good results so far.http://weilerwelding.com/shopsite_sc...guard.html#196Last edited by Cracker; 01-04-2006 at 04:35 PM.
Reply:Good results filtering beer or air?  I like my beer unfiltered.  I am guessing that West Hell is a state of mind and not an actual place in GA.  As a child, I was always discouraged from interacting with preachers' children.  The daughters were especially dangerous.  Those kids KNEW how to get you in trouble... with you know who...Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:Hey guys, I've used the motorguard m60 till I got an airdrier. It works well for the money, and has a re-useable media. I recently found one of the harbor freight (I know I shouldn't say that) refrigerated compressed air driers for 125.00. I just got it hooked up two weeks ago, but it seems to work pretty well. It is rated at about 20-25cfm@125psi. I haven't had to fire up the plasma cutter for much yet, but will soon. I am currently doing alot of sandblasting and have not had any moisture problems yet. With the volume of air blasting takes, that has to say something about the little guy. In conclusion, I have to give it a thumbs up so far and will let you know if it "craps out" on me.
Reply:hi folks, i'm a newbe here but thought i would put my 2 pennys worth in here. i used to do some wet and dry blast work and moisture was always a prob so i built a simple condensor along the insides of my utility box on my truck which was followed by a simple water filter cured my probs. i used ten rows of 1 nch thin walled copper pipe, each ten feet long looped 3 inches apart  2 inches from the wall of the utilty box to dissipate the heat in the air and condense the moisture so the filter could collect it. so u dont think i'm off track i use this same set up in smaller form on my hypertherm 380 with a water seperator ahead of a $26.00 harbor (omg) frieght paint filter regulator model 1118. works great.
