I've read different post here and abroad that say aluminum can be welded with a DC tig. What is the low down on this?
Reply:I think DC makes a better weld but the base metal has to be *perfectly* clean before hand.  The purpose of welding ac, especially square wave, is to knock off oxide.  The problem with getting your aluminum weld perfectly clean is that it oxidizes almost instantaneously in air.

Reply:Is there anything special setup that needs to be done other than cleaning metal extremely well?
Reply:you can do dc straight but you need straight heliumn for your sheilding gas...zap!

Reply:Howdy howdy!  You can DC alluminum just fine.  DCEP neads a very large tungsten, for the amount of heat it puts out, but cleans really well.  Good for very thin sheet type stuff, but not efficient for materials of any real significant thicknesses, since a majority of the heat is focused on the electrode.  DCEN can be used as well, but only for very thick sections practically, as it provides very very little cleaning action, however most of the heat is transferred to the workpiece.  polished looks are usually less of an issue on larger more structural pieces... perhaps.  Anyway, there is tons of info out there on it.  There are far better processes, if you have the equipment capable.  Brian Lee  Sparkeee27
