Where do you guys get your metal from for projects?
Reply:I've got a fabrication shop with a large stock that I go to for the usual alloys including steel, 4043 aluminum, and 304 stainless.  There is another shop in the area that only cuts and sells metal and does no fabrication.  They carry some of the hard to find stuff like 316 stainless.
Reply:in the stock rackthe place where i work has been in buisness since 1957and some of the orig metal is probably still in the rack(s) ...zap!
Reply:Banal as it sounds, check the Yellow Pages under 'metal'.  Most cities have several competing metal suppliers with adverts in the phone book.  Here in Ottawa Canada, a good source for everything has been Luconen Metals - as found ... in the Yellow Pages.  Your can obtain prices (and directions) over the phone then maybe visit a few; the best usually stands out.Rick V

Scrap dealers in my area (Denver) will not sell to independent, small consumers like me (liability ) at least as far as I've been able to tell. And the used metals places sell heavily rusted stuff for nearly the price of brand new material.

Reply:Mostly scrap yards....at about 10 to 15 cents per pound.  New short & long pieces, used ,  anything,...... If I think I might need it I buy it. Put it on the rack, and couple years later I actually use it.At that price, I can't go wrong.Angle, channel, beams, flat stock, electric motors, car parts, pallet racking, pipe, etc. I shop at 3 or 4 places... I like the hunt, too.
Reply:You know thats a great question, Chris! The steel that I come across is usually galvanized and its a pain to grind it all off. (not to mention getting through the paint first...) I'm in Memphis, Tenn. Anyone have any good hot spots around me?I also used to live in Florida. I know of a few good scrap yards in that area that dont mind selling small stuff by the pound if anyone is interested. Zack
Reply:due to being in the recycling business I come across alot of steel that is good for projects, the other day I was in my favorite yard and low and behold they had a dozen 5x10 sheets of quarter inch plate, snagged that up fast @ 10 cents a pound.... my suggestion is to try the smaller scrapards that are indipendantly owned..  Metal Management  ( www.mtlm.com) is  where I get 90% of my steel for projects and they always treat me right, prime example is this compressor I am building, the pump, motor, flat steel and tanks came from there for a whopping total of $27
Reply:BigNATE--Thanks for the tip. Will Metal Management sell bits and pieces to me--not being a recycler? They have location in Phoenix near me.
Reply:I dont see why not, just give them a call and see if they will sell to you. usually there is a $20 minimum (fyi)
