well im new here, just learned to weld on a stick welder that is easily 30 years old. the sticks are likely 15 to 20 years old and i can lay a pretty good weld (i was surprised that it still worked after all these years). the only problem i have is excessive splatter and in some cases the rod itself flames at the end a bit. is this due to age of the sticks?
Reply:The excessive splatter is caused by moisture absorption by the flux coating of the rod. What rype of rod are you using? Some are more tolerant of moisture than others, but moisture is bad news for most rods. That is why rods are stored in dessicated, sealed containers prior to use or are stored in rod ovens after the package is opened. Invest in some fresh rods so you don't get discouraged in your renewed welding activity.awright |
