How to clamp certain objects

I just got into welding and I have been messing around with different things.  One of the things I'm having problems with is clamping items or holding them still.  Even just to do a tack weld sometimes its hard having to use one had to hold something and other to weld with. Do you all have any suggestions or techniques I can read up on.  I know c-clamps are a must. But what about for examples welding a 2" pipe to a flat plate.  I cant seem teem to hold the pipe straight with one hand lol while I tack.
Reply:do you have square tube?  Sometimes that works.  There are differnt jigs you can make when its appropriate.  Give me some joint designs I can help you with things to make.  But without seeing a vision in my head I cant really tell what type of clamping system is appropriate.  Always remeber tehres more than one way to skin the cat, and often more than that.IF it Catches...Let it Burn

Reply:A right angle welding magnet or two might work good for what you're trying to do.Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:I'd be lost without my magnets. I use them constantly. They're triangular in shape and specifically made for working with metal. The corner at the right angle is cut away so they can stay in place while you weld. The ones here are about the size of a hand. I've always got a couple within reach stuck to the side of my welding table.Scott
Reply:If you do a lot of that stuff then make some jigs.  Angle and channel work for holding round stock steady.  Place it on either side of the round stock then tack the stock where you want it.
