how many of you work in a place where "everyone" welds..(well at least they think they can  )but there's only one mask? the shop has a maskand i have my own and its off limits to others.. any thoughts on using a "community" mask?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:A community mask yuck I've found enough ways to get sick and using a community mask isnt one of them. I dont think thats a good idea too many things to catch doing that.Stick to using your own Lance
Reply:i got 4 at home and 1 at work so no i dont knowChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Well...if you are like me...I prefer my own....after all it does get hot and sweaty...and those sweat bands in the helmets just get nasty...let alone some one else's sweaty head in there.......yeah.
Reply:I have my own. The two that work supply don't even have sweet bans, for the life of me i don't know why people keep using them, O yer on saying that my shield is falling apart if Arc one is listening  What the!!!
Reply:I was working in about 140 degree temerpatures wearing the community leathers.  I wouldn't even get back in them after that day.
Reply:What's a mask?
Reply:*yikes*, you should ask your place of work to buy masks for everyone... i mean, its a safety thing, and technically with only one mask, only one person can be welding at a time. More production for them if everyone had their own masks..
Reply:I use my own. That way I got everything in a hood that I want. Here in the Great White NorthMosquitoes can't fly at 40 below
Reply:I always used my own...even when I was told I could not. I don't trust anyone else to put in a gold filter...too many idiots around that just don't care...and they are MY eyes.

Reply:Well I wont use community if thats what you call it.   I dont share.  I feel its in the same ball park as sharing underwear, socks, hats or anything else.   Just personalIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:It'd be no different than sharing a pair of dentures. What's the problem?Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:I couldn't imagine not having my own hood.  I use a variable shade Speedglas and have another fixed shade 11 for spectators.  I also have a standard hood with a gold filter and there are always a few HF auto hoods lying around.  A hood and leathers seems like something I wouldn't really want to share.-Heath
Reply:I agree with Bob's list. Some more than others.I have always used my own shield, There just seems to be something wrong with sharing one. Simonhttp://members.optusnet.com.au/~abba/index.html
Reply:Sharing anything of a personal nature is a bad idea. It's a good way to get what the other fellow has.
Reply:That's like a place I worked at, we where doing some mold removal and I said something about getting a respirator, so the boss went to the store and came back with ONE! He said we can take turns since its a nasty job and just share the mask, needless to say I took my lunch early and went to the store! As others have stated its just wrong!Looking back on it I'm not sure what was worse the fact that I had to suggest the respirator or that he expected us to share!"Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine"However "lack of planning on my part may constitute an emergency on yours"

Reply:I must have misunderstood, I thought he meant just the helmet! So are you guys saying you use masks when welding(under your helmet, hood)? And it is a sincere question(not being sarcastic!)Last edited by stumpster; 05-27-2006 at 03:52 PM."Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine"However "lack of planning on my part may constitute an emergency on yours"
Reply:here in the UK most welding firms if not all supply welding face masks or air filter masks.not for shareing..but no doubt some of the not so nice employers will flout the laws where aplicable..often site welders that drift from one employer to another usually have their own welding helmets anyway.. some bought and some aquired as they say...watch out for the ebay helmets some are not as good as they propose to be?some might say its imposibleOriginally Posted by stumpsterI must have misunderstood, I thought he meant just the helmet! So are you guys saying you use masks when welding(under your helmet, hood)? And it is a sincere question(not being sarcastic!)
Reply:Yep,definatly get your own. Some thing just should not be shared.
Reply:personally never been to a shop where you werent required your own hood for weld test.that said, in many shops general labor, ie grinders and cutters, want to learn to weld, of course sharing.  I have shared on rare occasion with a good friend when either my hood wasnt accessible, or when they had a hood better suited for thejob.  For instance working on the undercarriage of an armored truck it is sometimes a real benefit to an auto dark, though mostly I prefer not to use them.  I have borrowed my good friends for these few moments.  I also wear a welder's cap all the time, when I share I make sure I pull the hat on right to my eye brows so the band is only touching hat.  Thats just my preference.  As far as community hood goes, nope not at all.  I know its a small differnce, but I feel better this way anywayIF it Catches...Let it Burn

Reply:In my shop the worst person for using anyones helmet is the forman doesn't have he's own at work I keep mine locked away when not in use I don't share any of my safey gear Creative metal Creative metal Facebook
Reply:PSE stands for "personal safety equipment". A welding hood is a PSE device. The key word is PERSONAL.I love the analogy about sharing underwear, same-o same-o.Bob Creely
