I am building an 4mm plate aluminum boat. A few of the welds look just a bit daggy. (I have been welding with a mig) My question is this, I have a 200 amp ac pulse tig (new) that I have never used before would I be able to wash the few daggy welds over with the tig without building up to much heat?
Reply:When you add additional heat to your weld bead you increase the size of the heat affected zone.  In the case of aluminum the slow TIG heat will soften more of your alloy.   You can make the welds "look" better but it will not make the welds better.  I have seen MIG welds dressed up this way to the point that the surrounding aluminum plate took on a gray cast that indicated overheating.  The older hands on the job who had done years of welding aluminum fish boats figured there would be metal failures in those areas years afterward.  Keep in mind that repeated welding on the same area whether it is MIG or TIG has its risks.

Reply:I read the other thread and everyone seems to have different opinions, I am not a welder by trade or have I been taught, I am self-taught with many years of experience welding on the farm. I would consider myself a fair welder and had I had a problem on crucial part I would have been worried, the weld I did not like was the angle that covers the chine, for some reason it was the angle that I tried to weld it at that left me with a very rough weld. Any way I decided to go over it with the tig I was very concerned about doing it as I have never used a tig before. I practiced for ½ an hour or so before taking it on. It has come up fair to good.   My conclusion after reading the other thread was it would be no different going over with the tig in regard to heat than had I ground it out and run another weld.I will post some pics of the project if anyone is interested. Thanks for you help fellas
