Is it safe to use a light?

I am a new at welding and would like to know if it is ok to use a light to help see the weld area when wearing the welding helmet.  I don't have an auto - darkening  helmet yet.  Thanks, Spatter
Reply:I usually have 500W halogens aimed at my welding table when in the shop for that reason.  Turn on the one that's aimed in the area you need the extra light.  You need to make sure the light isn't behind you so that it comes into the back of your hood, though.
Reply:Iused to weld with a microscope with a built in light ring. Like MAC, I also use a halogen light when its "dark" in the garage. As long as it is not behind you like he stated, you'll be fine.

Reply:Im a newbie too and my shop's lighting is the real sh@#ts.  So I developed an ergonomic highly technological light that follows every movement of my head. No matter were my head turns the light follows me.  Yep.... highly technical. A cheap LED light and a piece of scrap tin.   I mounted a battery powered LED  light onto my welding helmet. Where ever my head goes the light goes. The light was from a discount ben at cheapzone autoparts.   It's mounted onto an easly bendable tab (part of a former auto liscence plate) on my welding helmet. This tap bends easy so this allows me to aim it so the light will point at a natural spot in my my eye's line of focus.  I got it aimed pretty much where I like it now.
