Just curious. What do they do to make it different from ordinary steel?Scott

Reply:Here's a good one from the selection that Googling "what is stainless steel" uncovered:http://chemistry.about.com/cs/metals.../aa071201a.htm

Reply:I checked those links. Thanks. This is interesting:Stainless steel can actually rust quite rapidly if it fails to form its protective oxide layer. This tends to happen when the stainless has had carbon steel forced into its surface, as by being dragged over carbon steel during installation, brushing with carbon steel, grinding with a contaminated wheel, or temporary welds to carbon steel.

Reply:I keep seperate wheels and brushes.  For aluminum especially.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Yep.  Steel stuff, stainless stuff, and aluminum stuff.  The stainless and aluminum brushes are both made from stainless!
Reply:Then there's also the fact that stainless grinds better with wheels that are designed explicitly for that purpose.  The same goes for aluminum.-Heath

Reply:Excellent start Grahame! However, you also need to explain the importance of the addition of specific amounts chromium and Nickel to what is basically ordinary carbon steel, and then if necessary to explain the reasons for having the various types of properties found in a variety of different types of Stainless steels being used. How to achieve those properties with different types of elements that are added or excluded to the alloy, and the result of also adding or excluding other metals & alloying elements such as; silicon, Molybednum, Titanium, Niobium-otherwise known as Columbium, phosphorus, or not!    Wait a minute! I'm getting ahead of myself here so, I'll just say that your explanation is an excellent one for a beginner, and if the beginner wants to learn more, then this person would be well advised to read some information explaining basic metallurgy principles and then go on from there if they choose to persue the query even further!  Respectfully,SSBN727  I do like your analogy Grahame!!!"Run Silent...  Run Deep!!!
Reply:Originally Posted by GrahameHi ScottNo one seems to have answered your question.Making steels and stainless steels  is not all that different from cooking.Follow the recipe steps and use the correct ingredients and you end up with what you want.emphasis added) Stainless steel is a steel alloy or a mixture of different metals. There are many different types of stainless steels. Some can be welded ,others only welded with difficulty and others ,not at all.Iron, carbon, chromium, nickel are only some of the ingredients steel makers use in varying proportion to make the many types of stainless steels. As welders ,we need to have knowlwdge of what the various stainless steels are and how and if there can be welded. Various grades of stainless steels are welded with different types of stainless steel filler rods, electrode or automatic wire.In some circumstances if we weld a particular grade with the incorrect consumable severe corrosion or failure of the weld can result.Thats about as simple as I can make it for a beginner.Grahame

Reply:Oh, I get it now. The original question was how do we make stainless steel...ahhhh, like in our kitchen, as opposed to what is stainless steel made out of or how is it constituted
Reply:And what's with the 'beginner' label?Haven't you guys noticed that I'm a WeldingWeb Foreman?
Reply:Originally Posted by scott brunsdon. You had it right the first time. I was curious to know what they did in the manufacturing process to make stainless steel as opposed to ordinary carbon steel. Those links explained the things that are added e.g. chromium. I didn't realise there were so many different types of stainless steel.Scott
Reply:Not 303 stainless.  Generally referred to as "free machining", this contains high amounts of sulphur designed to get a better chip load, but this alloying addition to ease machining makes it virtually impossible to weld well.I r 2 a perfessional

Reply:nickels and chrome and the different grades from the recipe and heating.

Reply:To everyone else who grasped the irony and didn't feel compelled to lamely point out the obvious, thanks.
