Reply:I build conveyor systems for Designed Conveyor Systems http://www.designed-conveyor.com/.  We build mostly for FedEx, UPS, and some odd jobs.  I am supervisor now so that just means I sit in the office and read the new posts on this site  .  No, I do have to work.  And with some of the people they hire it keeps me very busy.  I cut, weld, paint, and assemble when something has to go out soon.  Other than that I make sure everyone else is working. My main interest is my side business Dixieland Welding (my daughter's name is Dixie).  It's not taking off very fast but I don't really have time for it either.  Maybe one day I'll be on my own. How many of you are running your own business full time?  Is it really worth it not knowing you have a steady income?DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:I run my own business, Zero Tolerance Fabrication. I specialize in chassis fabrication on everything from dragsters and hot-rods to off-road trucks and sand cars. I also do production welding for various companies including Champion Rescue Tools and RUV Motorsports. Like almost any other welding shop, I'm a wh*re. If you have cash, I will pretty much weld, fix, or fabricate anything.   I have built everything from simple tables to full second story mezzanines for customers and do weld repairs on just about anything that can be welded.I also race off-road trucks with Dave Turner Motorsports. We race a 2004 Ford F-150 for SCORE and BITD. We are Ford factory sponsored and part of their R&D program for the F-150 series trucks. It's a good thing I'm self employed because no other boss would let me have them amount of time I need off to go race across Arizona, Nevada, and Mexico!!http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:I'll let you on a secret: I'm not a welder.I work in an office smack bang in the middle of Sydney. It's a company I started about 4 years ago with a mate.I'm the boss and the oldest person here. We've got 8 people on staff and around 70 quantity surveyors who do contract work for us around the country. We do tax work for property investors. It's not at all interesting, but it's a pleasant workplace - casual clothes, flexible hours (especially for me), music, no clients visiting etc. We've built good systems and we've hired good young people. And we treat them well. The only time it's not pleasant is Fridays, because that's the day I let Kylie play her tragic collection of really bad 80s music.I get through my work in 2-3 hours most days. I'm here mainly to handle calls from tricky/cranky clients or accountants or affiliates - we do work for a bank and some big real estate groups. We get asked to speak at seminars to investors and accountants in Sydney and other cities. I do that. It's fun, though accountants do like to try and trip me up. I have no accounting training at all, but I can think on my feet pretty well and bluff.I've done lots of different things and one day we'll wrap up this company and I'll do something completely different again. This suits me right now as I have young kids and can take time off whenever I want to. I envy people who can make a living working with their hands.
Reply:I weld and fabricate for Northwest Jet Boats Inc. We build the best aluminum jet boat in the buiseness (argueably). Myself and one other guy fabricate most of the parts that go in at the weld-shop level and take on any special circumstance (custom) jobs. We build up to 170 boats a year ranging from 35 to 100K dollars. Its fun, but would like to do some machining. Also, at home and on the side, I build utility trailers. I charge what the other guys charge but mine are built from rectangular tubing, not angle iron. I don't have any trouble selling them and making a decent profit, but would like to manufacture something that doesn't require an MCO/MSO and the paperwork. So if anyone has a suggestion, feel free to let me know. My shop is small. Recently one side project was a door breaker for the local S.W.A.T. team.Bill

Reply:BY DAY:I'm just about to finish my 10th year as an engineer for "arguably" America's third largest passenger car manufacturer.  We jokingly say that since Daimler bought out Chrysler making them German...  Actually, we have been around a while since we've been producing hand built sportscars since 1989.  I work in the division that handles the street legal models along with the SCCA spec racer.  A plant down the road a mile houses Panoz / G-force which is one of the 2 chassis builders for Indy cars.  Since we are a small company we have to handle a wide variety of jobs - one day I might be designing a new part with cad, next day prototyping it (here's the welding part!), next day testing, etc.  Also, I fill in and do some of the custom welding projects.BY NIGHT:I have recently started a 1 man tube bending and general fabrication shop.  I have a mandrel tube bender with dies up to 4" OD on a 4" centerline radius, and supposedly the bender will do a little larger.  I also have a non-mandrel hydraulic rotary draw bender that I built for doing up to 2" OD heavy wall tubing such as for roll cages.  I have a full array of welding and cutting equipment and also a small machine shop set up in my new 2000 square foot shop.  My focus is on automotive applications since that's where I have the most experience - exhaust, chassis, plumbing, etc.  And, I can handle the one-off stuff or do small to medium production runs.  I'm hoping to make the production stuff the main focus for steady work with the cool custom stuff in between for fun. There are several pics of the new shop and some more recent projects in the gallery on my website - www.tubularfab.comJason
