I have a Millermatic 251 and I need a way to make extra money. I'm not certified and don't have more than 2hrs a day to work with but I can weld pretty well. I'm just looking for some ideas of a service or a product I could make and sell to pull in some extra cash. Thanks for any input, Steve.
Reply:word of mouth brings in plenty of welding for me. by saturday morning my yard looks like a steel scrap yard, people drop off items all week. wife hands 'em a tag and says, put your name and number and what ya want on it. for awhile people where dropping stuff of and she would forget whose it was. i charge more for priority work and less for the better the friend is. but i weld all day sat and sun. then a few hrs a night. sometimes i gotta tell the wife, tell em it'll be awhile. but i got a nephew who is 12 and sold 2 bb guns to buy fis first lincoln sp170. i supply his wire and electric and give him $10 to weld not critical stuff and plasma pieces i need.i did some advertising on craigslist and a small sign in the front yard. now it's all word of mouth."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it

Reply:Cool, I'll have to get an add up on craigslist too. Thanks.
Reply:Prettty much the same for me except I don't do as much. I have a Lincoln PowerMig 255 and access to my buddy's Miller Bobcat and a MM 185 with aluminum spool gun so I do a bit of welding on the side. I've worked on trailers (new toungue, hitch, jack, fenders, ramps, winch mounts, entire trailers, even a battery box for holding a lawn mower battery to run the trailer lights when being towed by a tractor for hay rides), fixed box blades, bush hog decks, built various bumpers and attchments for tractors, ladder racks for trucks, custom bumpers, a couple of drop-hammers for my buddy's dock building business, all kinds of custom body work for cars (mostly VWs), welded up holes on the back of an MR2 where the wing was, modified motorcycle gas tanks, custom mounts for the same, etc. etc.Right now I have to weld a pipe and fitting for a water jet (same buddy with the dock building company), a ripped aluminum pontoon on a pontoon boat, and a small barge to build, not to mention the smoker another buddy wants built and the trailer fenders I need to finish on my brother's car trailer. My prices depend on who you are, whether or not I want to do it, how soon you need it and may go up or down depending on my mood. I am not a professional shop. I weld all day at work (OK, not really, I train people) so my personal time is expensive.Always looking for another old VW, especially in the southeast.
Reply:I do a fair bit of work on gates and bird cages (aviarys).I just did a job for a mate and now get a fair bit of work. Its all word of mouth.Theres no such thing as scrap metal, its all good.
Reply:Word of mouth is how I started, as it has been said "Do good work, and you don't have to advertise".

Reply:Commercial vehicles are required to be lettered in MA. It is more advertizing for the guy that painted the truck, everyone asks me "who did that".
Reply:Ahhhh, didn't know that... and my joke didn't flow through very well
