I have a Honda Foreman 450 and need to weld some 1" x 1/8" angle on one of the tubular frame members to cover a small rusted hole.  I've prepped the hole and welded a small bead around the edge for more stability, but I'm worried about burning through.I'm using a little shop welder (C/H 70 amp).  It has settings only for 1/16 and 5/64 rods, but I've been using some 6013 3/32 rods.  This will be a vertical down weld.  Should I make sure and get the 5/64 rods in 6013? I've noticed a fair amount of porosity in the 3/32 practice welds. Thanks in advance for your help.  This site has been a great tool for learning.bd
Reply:Porosity won´t be a matter of size of the rod, it is because of the preparation of the steel or because the rod had humidity on it (I think that was the only reasons)My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:These were fresh rods from Northern Tool.  They seemed ok, but I'll dry a few out to be sure.  Thanks, anyone have any ideas on the use of bigger rods in such a small welder?bd
Reply:You should be ok with 3/32 rods, 6013's like the heat though. You may have an easier time with 6011's and 7014's. Personally I have never really cared for 6013's, but that's just me, alot of people like them.

Reply:bluduk, I had to weld the frame on my Foreman a couple of years ago due to a "mishap". I had to straighten and then gusset the a-arm mounts .  I used 7018 at the lowest amperage I could get a steady arc from and was gusseting with 1/4" plate.    Sorry, but it's been too long to remember what that exact setting was.As to what to use for grinding, I like Norton flap disks in the 80 grit variety. They last quite a while and can remove a little or alot of material if you learn how to use 'em."I need this parade like I need a hole in the head"~John F.Kennedy
Reply:Thanks for your help. I have been adding some gussets as well and angle on the long stretches where corrosion has taken over.  I used 5/64 6013 for most of it, but I did try the 3/32 7014.  The 6013 burns better b/c of my little 70amp box.  So far it's turned out well.  All I have to say is don't ride your 4 wheeler in the salt marsh.bd
Reply:I would only use tubing for gussets. If you use plate it will push through or tear out the existing tubing. I learned this the hard way. Just my 2 cents worth..............
Reply:hey emerick can you tell more about it? I´ve used some plate for gussets and would like to know what you did and what happenedMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:on thin wall tubing and using just gussets any stresses will all be centered on the tube and rip out or push in. If a tube is used the stresses are distributed all the way around the tube will will decreas the stresses in a central point. Thant is my experience anyway
Reply:A newbie question:Why are you using a vertical down as opposed to a vertical up?  Is it because the metal is thin and penetration is not an issue? I have learned that for stick welding, use a vertical up because the pool drops out.DIY turbo Z28http://JunkyardTurbos.com
Reply:was there mention of verticle down welding anywhere?
