Hello all, I finally decided to get into welding. I use to airbrush and found a good welder to be just like an artist. To me welding is an industrial art by all means of the term! So my hat off to you guys. My wife and I have alot of projects planned and beyond. 1. A gate for our driveway (we get alot of unwanted people)2. Implements for our new tractor..bucket forks, 3 point hitch, repairing a old harrow.3. Modding two trailers we have.4. Modding a old Toy 4x4 and offroad gearI decided to go MIG instead of stick because I am to "anal" about rust. Plus I have angle grinders and dremels too. I would like to do sheet metal and up to 1/4" material. I might do 3/8", but I will be able to weld both sides of it though. Most of the welding will be steel and I have narrowed it down to 3. My first is The Millermatic 175 http://store.weldersplus.com/mil907049.htmlI like Miller products and the infinite voltage control is nice when I get better at welding. The only aspect I do not like is it needs the spoolgun for aluminum. I did email Miller, they recommend the gun to keep the aluminum wire from kinking. We have a Miller at work for welding aluminum without a spoolgun. I am told just have to be careful not to kink the cable I told by the operator. Personally, I do not like having something heavy like a spoolgun when welding. The second is a Clarke 180EN http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...1890_2003118906 presets for voltage and a good warranty. Only aspects is I don't know much about Clarke welders and cord and ground are short. The third is Hobart 180 Handler. A good welder by some owners. What I don't like 4 presets for voltage and a friend/professional welder told me stay away from Hobart welders his humble opinion. I do understand Hobart and Miller are owned by the same company now.Any input on these welders or others is appreciated!! Thanks, Dan
Reply:i dont know much about diffrent machines..except i'll figure it out eventually..any mig nowadayzzze is pretty reliable..and i'm guessing you would have no problem getting 220 volts to the garage..go with a 220 GAS mig..you'll be "that much" ahead of anything you would have to do..and b.t.y.welcome to the boards.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Xccelagator, I want to let you know that Hobart has introduced the HH 187 which is a great welder. You should check into it also I think you would be well pleased with it. I don't think it has hit the market yet but if not it should be showing up the first part of November.
Reply:That looks promising Gnewby! ThanksDoes anyone know about Clarke Welders? Any input is welcomed by this newbie. Dan
Reply:Zapster, Yes I have 220 in my shop/doghouse!!! LOLDan
Reply:I've had a MM 175 for over 3 yrs and have run about 25 lbs of solid wire thru it and the only problem I've had is to blow dust out of the lead liner twice. It wells good at any setting for the wire size and the voltage and wire speed controls have always worked really good. I know 25 lbs of wire doesn't sound like much to the guys that do it for a living, but for a home shop welder I feel I got what I wanted/needed. JMHO, Mike PS: A friend recommended a 240 v model vs 120 v. After trying a couple of 120's,I totally agree with him.Last edited by mla2ofus; 10-23-2006 at 10:35 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:As zapster has pointed out, the migs are pretty reliable from all the companies.I have no firsthand experience with a Clarke welder, but the garage where I get my vehicles serviced recently bought a new Clarke mig (If I remember correctly it's the 130 amp). The owner is very happy with it.I personally have the Hobart Handler 180, and I haven't found the tapped setting for the voltage to be a problem (although I haven't really gotten to use it too much, yet). A friend has the Millermatic 175 and he is happy with his welder. Any mig will do aluminum best with a spool gun, so that doesn't make much difference from one to another.I don't believe you would go wrong with any of the welders you mentioned, but since you said you like Miller, and like the infinite voltage control, it seems like you have pretty well answered your own question. You really can't go wrong with any of 'em.EdWhen the drops the stops!Check out my website at: Tombstone 180 ACHandler 120Millermatic 210Powermax 380Harris & Victor torchesSawzallChop Saw |
