i am the new prowd owner of a Victor Journeyman set. now i got to save my pennies to get Oxygen bottle and Gas.... which brings me to a question for the pro's. should i use acetylene or Propalene (ms) i heard it is safer than acetylene? should only have to change tips if i switch Right ?MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:I don't think you can weld with propylene.  I have seen it used for cutting in places that do a lot of cutting as it is generally cheaper than acetylene.  If you are only going to use your torch for cutting you could used propane which is much less expensive than acetylene and more available.  In addition you can use the same cylinder that would be used on a gas grill to get started.  In my area you can buy a new 20 lb cylinder for less than $20 and it cost about $11 to fill it.
Reply:You can't weld with propylene, but it brazes and cuts just as well as acetylene.  It is safer, but it is also much cheaper in the long run.  You need to run special tips with propylene.  Acetylene may also start getting harder to get because the environmentalists frown upon it.I personally weld a lot with my acetylene setup, acetylene is the only way for me to go.
