I wouldn't call myself a welder, but I do a fair amount and want to get better. I'm having some trouble with my powermig 255. Can anyone tell me what kind of gas pressure I should be using with .035 wire on 1/8- 1/4" plate? I've also had trouble with setting up the Prince Spool gun for Al. The recommended settings just don't seem to work out. Welds are pretty ugly unless I use quite a bit less amperage. Is there a good site that clearly shows techniques for using this setup? I can try to teach myself forever. Sometimes I need to ask someone who knows what they're doing. This seems like a great site. Thanks for any help.
Reply:ok for steel use c25,or 95/5 argon /oxy or co2for aluminum use 99.9 argonChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:My welding experience is stick and TIG for over 30 years. I bought a PM255C with the new Magnum 250LX Spool Gun, and I'm back to day one. Every time I tried using the recommended settings, the tip melted. The recommended voltages are way too high. There are settings listed on the inside cover of the machine, and in the spoolgun manual. Both recommend extremely high voltages. I'm running 3/64ths (0.047) 4043 with straight Argon. For 1/4 inch aluminum I/m setting 250-260 wire speed, and 19-20 volts. Unfortunately you will have to experiment on your own, but I hope this helps. I called Lincoln and they started asking me questions on how to set it up.
Reply:Gas pressure, that's a problem for all of us at one time or an other.OK, the purpose of the shielding gas is to shield the molten and solidifying weld metal from oxidation. So, you need a gas flow rate and even distribution of gas from the nozzle that will protect the weld. Not enough gas is obvious, turn off the gas and see what happens. Too much gas causes turbulence and is also bad (and expensive).See recent thread:http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=7311 |
