i am welding these legs onto this distributor housing. i wire brusehd everything clean. i am just not sure what rod/gas combo to use. i have a more dsetailed thread in the projects section that i will update until the whole project in finished. i am using a syncrowave 200 tig, not sure on what my setting should be. i should be set to ac right? what about amperage?
Reply:ps, dont worry, that dirty part you see is the part that goes inside the valve cover. the part i am welding to is actually clean
Reply:On a casting use 5356 and clean both the TIG wire and the weldment with Acetone. AC - yes, and the setting will depend on the thickness of the material. ?That looks like 1/4" aluminum, try a setting of 80 first.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Do yourself a favor and try welding on some like sized scrap aluminum pieces before you attempt welding your real parts. By the time you get comfortable with the scraps, you will have a good idea of where to set the machine. Same with your stainless plumbing. Gotta do it...
Reply:Hello,If my eyes are correct, this is a Honda camcap and dist. hsng??? My point being the camcaps are not pure aluminum, but rather a mix of pot metal and aluminum. They will cause you a bit of trouble welding them. I weld these caps daily and you should as stated earlier, practice, practice, practice but unlike the earlier suggestion, I would suggest you practice on camcaps rather then on a piece of scrap aluminum. Just get it well prepped, clean everywhere, grind the spot and wash with acetone and keep the amps low 85-125 and keep your balance favoring max penetration rather then max cleaning. 4043 1/16th wire will do better then 5356 since the item will probably get hotter then 150degF. Making 4043 a better choice then 5356. You can also get a lower temp Quality welding wire (not the stuff you see at the county fair) from any distributor selling  Alco Tec products P/N 4047 and P/N 4145. This will make the job easier. You can see the product offerings at alcotec.com they have a tech service available on line. I hope this is helpful for you. Good luck.ric
Reply:thanks for the info. i still have the other cam caps i cut up so i can pratice on those
Reply:If the material contains some zinc (pot metal), watch out for the fumes. Best to have some ventilation to avoid inhalation.
