question about a weldment...

so i have a question about welding a bilstein 7100 shock rod.  according to bilstein the rod is "case hardened and chromed."  i'd like to remove the heim on the end and replace it with a more standard shock bushing mount.  the heims aren't serviceable and have to be replaced fairly often; this would be a good workaround. ideas, opinions?  cna i just grind off the chrome finish?  andy
Reply:I don't think you'd need to grind off the chrome in order to weld. At the place I work we make hydraulic cylinders and all of the rods are hard-chrome plated. When we weld stuff on to the rods we don't remove any of the chrome, even from the weld area. We just weld right over it. Chrome does not harm the weld in any way (in fact, add enough and you get stainless steel). Just be sure not to breath in the fumes (chromium fumes are pretty bad for ya).That being said, are you confident that you have the skills and equipment necessary to make a sound weld that will hold up to those kinds of stresses?Visit Tensaiteki.com
