I mainly will be welding aluminum tube/tube or tube to plate for automotive/ motorcycle applications and have some concerns over my chose in my TIG welder. I have settled on the Miller Sync 200 runner and am wondering if this is overkill. This will be used in my 1 car garage and being able to wire it up for residential use is also a concern. I am alittle confused on what is need for strong welds of ex. 1/16" tube to 3/8" plate will I be ok with double side welding?
Reply:i dont know squat about all the diffrent tig machines out there now..But i do know this..for doing aluminum eventually you will need a watercooled torch..expecially if you want to go hi amps..a foot pedal is a must have also so you can control the heat..as you go further with aluminum you need less heat and with no pedal there is no control.. "shiney splats will show up on your floor shortly after what you were welding "just dissapeared" "...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I agree with zap.  I would also suggest if you plan on doing any large amount of aluminum fab get a larger machine.  A 200 Miller syncrowave is excellent for steel or SS.  BUt remember, aluminum dissipates heat much much faster so you need more initial amperage to start a puddle.  I did some aluminum 10" pipe for a company with, around 3/8" wall thickness with an equivilent chill ring(backup ring).  I started the project with a Lincoln 255 amp AC/DC Tig from around the mid 1990s.  I was running that machine full tilt, and still could not get a sufficient puddle to form with a large pipe and a backup ring.  I had to then use  a Miller Syncrowave 350 to finish it.  If your doing aluminum, go bigger if you can.  ANd remember you have a duty cycle, a 200 amp machine, i dont know all the specs on the Miller 200, but you may be pushing it to the max if your welding for any significant amount of time on some decently thick aluminum. I would at least go with a Syncrowave 250 with the water cooled torch like ZAP said.  thats JMO!  And you can always add some helium to the mix instead of just straight ARGON to get a little bit hotter puddle, like a 75% argon, 25% Helium mix.  Hopefully i could help u with something here, good luck man!Pipe & Pressure Vessel Welder
