That tries to do this with you....Don´t know much about electricity yet, but I´m sure that´s not sane...My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:Well you saw him jump when his hand hit the tungsten didnt ya?  The arc has no amps so its basically like a static charge but that tungsten now, itll get you.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Now, try that on your teeth. You can also hold a piece of tig wire inside the cup (so it touches the tungsten) and use the other end of the wire to zap other people.
Reply:AAhhhhhh thats nothing new...i do it all the time..  see?just keep it away from the "weiners" lol...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Ahhh zap, don't forget to mention to the folks that you are not connected to GROUND in any way.If your body is part of the circuit from the electrode to the ground clamp (or earth ground, such as resting on a metal water pipe or a metal fence post sunk well into damp dirt or standing in a puddle of water, etc), then you are at the mercy of the machine's voltage and current capabilities and may get a possibly FATAL shock.Always remember that the machine doesn't care.  It it is told to cut something, then it will try and cut.  If is told to supply volts and amps, then it will try and do so.
Reply:Cool how HV will discharge into things that are not even grounded!Last edited by razer; 12-28-2006 at 05:33 PM.

Reply:UHH!!!!!1Me wanna try then!  (wish I had a HF machine)BTW...I got one big question...maybe hijacking thread but its mine lol =) How come when welding at university I could weld without the ground wire connected to the machine? Is that possible? or do elves exist? Anyone here seen that?My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!

Reply:I remember one time that I was using a rotary table.  I forgot to attach the welding ground lead to the ground lug on it.  The rotary table was on top of my metal welding table, which had the welding ground attached to it.It wound up that the welding machine found its ground through the rotary table, and by the time I welded a few seconds, it was smoking badly.I have even seen the ground go through grinders and other power tools.BTW, the pics shown are high frequency current...NOT the full power that the welding arc uses.

Reply:Originally Posted by lotechmanI have seen this many times.  It should not happen if everything is wired correctly.  What is happening is that the electrical supply ground that is used by your power panel is connected also to the negative terminal of your welding machine.  Some people will take all the negative ground leads in a building and bolt them to the steel framing of the building then use the building as a ground connector.  The only problem is that welding current can now return to the welding machine by a variety of paths including the electrical conduit pipe or worse any gas pipe lines in the building.  I often have seen it run up a hoist chain and through the crane winch.  This can damage the crane controls and motor as well as arcing on the chain sling.  I once discovered a chain sling blued from the welding current that ran through it.  The ground clamp had fallen off and the welder had not noticed.   Somewhere in that university shop there is a problem.  If you continue to weld without the ground clamp the result can be very expensive or dangerous!
Reply:zap, is that your version of coffee in the morning?
Reply:Originally Posted by elvergonJust a second...Did I mention that the "ground cable" of the machine was not even connected to the machine (it´s a multiprocess, therefore ground removable). Does this still make sense? I´m really lost in electricity yet...but if you say that the "ground of the power panel" is connected to the negative of the welder... that means you have a "cable coming from the panel to the machine" but there´s no cable from the machine except the power one but is AC. I´d understood if there was the "ground cable" (or negative if talking about the welder, cause it only runs DC) and it made any kind of contact with the steel structure of the building....but I can lay some piece of metal in the floor (concrete) and still being able to weld without any cable connected to the machine... Is this still making sense?
Reply:Just remember.....simply because youi CAN do something, doesn't mean that you SHOULD. People who do things like this are candidates for the Darwin Award.

Reply:elvergon... after a good welding session, feel the power cable to the machine.  ( or if you have a clamp amp meter... use that )  I'd bet either the cable gets warm, or there's current on it...
Reply:When ya buddy goes to lunch: replace the tungsten in his tig with a piece of aluminum wire you have ground to look like the tungsten....If he use a plastic or wooden seat that is held to then base by rivets: Find a capacitor about the size of a beer can, charge it up & attach a wire to each of the rivets... if he doesn't make a circuit immediately upon sitting down, he will rock back on the chair at some point & launch himself across the room....I remember in one welding class we have a "welfare mom" who was only taking the class to get some govt handout deal. Always asking the rest of the guys for receipts so she could claim more *expenses*...No mechanical apptitude whatsoever, shouldn't have been allowed to handle anything sharper than a bath sponge...She went on break, left the MIG turned on & the gun was resting on the trigger....on a metal table....it ran off about 5lb of wire & a bunch of gas before someone noticed...
Reply:Another good prank we did in welding school was get a piece of carbon paper, cut it the same size as the lens and insert it between the cover plate. Always good for a laugh!
