I need to get a cutting torch. What's the differences between a real victor brand setup vs an off brand? I'm going to be using it for occasional home shop use. Mostly cutting 3/16 to 1/2 inch materials. I'm not opposed to spending a little more money to get something that is going to last and that will work when I take it out to use it a year from now. Any information will be helpful. Any recomendations to the best place to buy online? Thanks,Jeremy.
Reply:I like either Harris or Victor.... I own several cutting outfits. Lately I've been leaning more toward the Harris just because the local suppliers seem to stock more of the Harris tips. I should point out that this only pertains to the larger tips #4, #5..... the 00, 1's etc seem to be fairly available for either. As far as a torch set up for home you'd probably want a multi attachment unit.. usually has a cutting head, O/A welding head and sometimes a small rosebud. As to the difference between the brand names and the off brand I don't know..... myself I'd rather buy a brand name like Harris and know I can get it repaired anywhere... or get parts anywhere..._________________Chris
Reply:I own a victor as well, but I hear the Smith is a good torch also. If Lorenzo likes the Harris, I would bet Its real good. Make sure its got flash back valves and is comfortable for you. Reply:I have used a victor for years. They are nice and parts are everywhere. I know folks that use the Harris...I think the same applies to them. I would go with a reputable brand. Oxy/Ace is dangerous enough without adding in the danger of a potentially defective torch or flashback arrestors. This is just one area I will not skimp on...and I am a big cheapster.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:If you're only cutting and not welding, go propane. Propane is safer and cheaper. I am personally a Smith man. I can give you some reasons why Smith is better, but if you do a search you will see them.
Reply:I like Victor but I hear Harris is good to. I refuse to work with junk.
Reply:Victor, Harris or Smith. Which ever one is most in favor in your neck of the woods would be the way to go.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill |
