I will be welding 1" thick tabs onto the flat side of 6"x6" round cylinders. These will be used to load test a machine around 20k lbs.My guess is that a good stick weld with the right rod would give the best penetration, but I am much more confortable with MIG and TIG.  Can my Syncrowave 180 TIG provide good penetration on material this thick?OR would my 200 amp MIG do OK in short arc or spray.I am trying to avoid these welds failing under sever static load and looking silly )
Reply:Something like that i'd tig..250 amps and blast away! Two root passes and a stitch and your good to go..But 7018 (5/32) around 200 220 amps would work too..But i'd prefer not to..  (Flat end to a round cylinder..just sounds wrong..)...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks for the help ZAP.  Do you think the 180 amps my Syncrowave 180 puts out will be enough?I have never Tig'd anything this thick (mostly 065-120 wall tubing). What about tungston/filler-  I am currently using 3/32 tugst ground pretty sharp w/ 1/16 filler. Thanks again for the reply and I will post pics once underway.By the way- by flat end of a cylinder, I mean the top (or bottom) of a cylindrical slug.
