For practice, I decided to make a "cube" out of some 1/8 inch flat mild steel. First I made the six sides (about 3 inches square) and drilled a quarter inch hole in one to provide a vent for the final assembly. So I tack weld up the cube (oxy/acet) and then start on all the edges. Everything looks normal until the second from the last edge and I notice a lot more air noise and I notice a light blue flame shooting out the cube's vent hole. It's like the cube has turned into a carburator. I'm guessing the outer flame envelope is being sucked into the cube and blowing out the vent. I finish the joint, pull back the torch...and the cube makes a popping noise similar to a torch pop. Can anyone explain what was going on there? Was the 1/4 inch vent hole a good idea? My concern was having internal pressure blow melted steel back at me.
Reply:Its the unburned accetlyne that gathers in the chamber..Just like a car engine..all the fuel is not burned as you may believe.. I heat shring tubing with a propane/oxy torch and the same thing happens in certian occasions.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That makes sense. Thanks. |
