Is it possible to use welding mig/tig type wire(cut in foot long lenghts) in my Arc welder? I ask because i still have issues with burning thru thinner metal using 6013 rods @40amps,or would this be a vain attempt?
Reply:Arcangel...Take a look at this thread. I think you may find your answer.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=8949- Paulhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Much abliged ZTAB!!.
Reply:Welding with any unfluxed  wire on a stick set up is just not practically possible, in the sense that the result will be extremely poor. The coated electrode flux acts in a couple of ways :1. As a gas shield de oxidiser during molten transfer from stick to work.As it increases in temperature and goes molten then gaseous and then back to molten and then to solid slag upon cooling.2. As a deoxidiser and scavenger ,releasing some  foreign matter around the weld zone and floating it out in the slag.3. As a support to form the bead as it cools to give shape and contour.4.Some electrode fluxes mix and add to  the volume of the weld metal.Electrode fluxes vary from one type of rod to the next - different electrode fluxes for different results.does this help?Grahame
Reply:Extremely Grahame!..to bad,i'm starting to kick myself in the pants a bit over buying this Arc welder for $400..wish i would have known even though they can be adjusted waay down to 40amps,it would still burn dam holes through a good deal of my projects   ..i don't get it..why on Earth do they not come out with tiny little..4011's-type rods then for the "us's" who want to be able to use all the ranges of a farm welder!
Reply:Arcangel,If you are welding thin material I can definitely assure you that 11's are not the ideal rod to suit. They burn with a hot fierce arc and are the last electrode you would want to use on thin sections.I have some 1.6mm  4112 rods that I have run down to 30 amps on my inverter welder-though it cost a dam site more than $400. Even that machine could not avoid blow through in a .020"wall thickness Chinese bag trolley frame. 4112 & 13s are ok for light structural stuff and for stuff like tillage equipment use LH  7016 'sThat would equate to a .060" wire diameter-sorry I am not sure of the fractional size.Again ,I hope this is of assistance to youGrahame
Reply:G'dai agyn mate! My latest project was rewelding up a good muffler to fix the baffle inside. After cutting a square section out and taking care of the baffle, the entire project became highly comical..the WHOLE re-welded square section now looks like big nastely frozen in time boogers attached, alongside of ugly patched holes where it burned through, even with the suggested 6013's..should i be in the mental hospital ward for not having a clue as to why i cannot accomplish such trivial fix'ums? last summer i too was haunted by messing with bicycle tubing, again holes-galore!I don't really have a problem with being unsteady or getting an arc going in my 'newbie' state of conditioning..i tried my best to weld it quickly, letting cool as much as patience allowed, with lowest amp setting.Comes down to this: "DO I have the wrong welder?"  sure seems this to be the answer.Last edited by Noa'zarc; 01-29-2007 at 05:22 PM.
Reply:Also a good example of practicing on scrap that is similar to the actual item you are going to repair first."Common sense is not very common"http://www.tahoekeyshome.com
Reply:Thing is i've not much spare junky metal lying around my yard, much less old mufflers..again i plead "is it a mig-welder i shoulda coulda bought?"
Reply:As you've demonstrated, stick welding thin material is almost impossible. The mig would allow you make a whole bunch of brief tack welds to patch up your muffler.
Reply:OK newbie alert, butWhat exactly is so different about the tig wire compared to the flux electrode?is the electricity delivered differently at a different cycle or ???why does wire type all of a sudden dictate if a weld can be made or not.
Reply:Wouldnt a TIG system be a better choice than a MIG for this application?  Alot more leeway, different metals, better welds, etc...ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!

Reply:Great, i'm heading out on the next columbia shuttle to get this muffler done then!..in the meanwhile..off to sears, thx for the aluminum tip though, you guys always amaze me with new clever methods.Dirtylittlesecret:At this point either seems more usable than the Arc,i'm just miffed i had to go an discover this forum after the lousey purchase.
