Folks,   Lincoln is updating their material thickness limits/recommendations on the Innershield NR-211MP and NR-212 wires.   They said they should have new info available on the web and in their literature soon (in a few weeks maybe), but for now the limits should be as follows:  NR-211MP 0.035 and 0.045 - 5/16 inch material max  NR-211MP 0.068 and thicker - 1/2 inch material or thinner  NR-212 - formerly unlimited material thickness limit, now 1/2 inch material MAXFYI.
Reply:Interesting, I have been using 5/64 NR-211 on stuff (non strutuall mostly equipment repairs) over 3/4" with no cracking or ill effects for some time now. The old recomendation was nothing over 3/4" with out maintaining an interpass temp of if I remeber 325. Must be a new flux or something, I still have 10 rolls of the old stuff so I am good for a while.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:About 11 years ago was when I first heard that about nr-211 and have steered away from since!
Reply:Wonder what spurred the change. Someone contest weld quality??
Reply:Methinks lawsuit. It takes a lot to get a vendor to suddenly make a drastic change to a spec.Craftsman 230a Buzz-box,  Lincoln 140T & 180T, Century K2789, PUROX W202 O/A14" cheapo chop saw that cuts straight and square!A toolbox of the cheapest Chinese tools money can buy"Real" tools all old reliable Husky/Craftsman/Proto stuff
Reply:As to how/what/why the material thickness limit changes, I don't know. What I do know is that the wire product catalog had some unclear info (typos?) and inconsistent thickness limits listed for the NR-211MP wire.  On the same page of the product spec catalog, there were two different recommendations for the same product.  When I asked Lincoln about it, they got back to me and acknolwedged the typos and said new info would be coming soon and the typo/misprint/goof would be corrected.Until the corrected info was published, Lincoln recommended the new thickness limits I listed above.  Maybe they are just being very conservative pending further investigation. When they dig further into the material properties, for all I know they may re-list the wire at an unlimited material thickness limit or they may have a different limit altogether.AFAIK, nothing sinister going on.  No wild speculation about lawsuits or anything like that.I'm just reporting information for y'all.
Reply:Well, good or bad it helps to be up to date on little things Thanks for the heads-up, it will be good to hear the final outcome.Craftsman 230a Buzz-box,  Lincoln 140T & 180T, Century K2789, PUROX W202 O/A14" cheapo chop saw that cuts straight and square!A toolbox of the cheapest Chinese tools money can buy"Real" tools all old reliable Husky/Craftsman/Proto stuff
