I have a 1991 dodge diesel single axle 4x4,the suspension is identical to a 1 ton dually. The tires are each rated at 3240lbs,the total gross weight of the truck empty is 6080lbs.Steer axle comes in at 3640lbs.and drive axle comes in at 2440lbs.I am tying to figure out how much weight i can carry safely in the box,I am planning on putting a welder, tools, small bench on the tailgate, rods, oxy and acetelyne bottle, also building a slide in skid for the welder in the box.I am hoping i dont have more than 2500lbs.in the box of my truck.Anybody have an idea how much weight i could carry safely and with no tickets from the "boys in blue"??
Reply:Whats the sticker tell you on the door post? Thats the one that matters. You can throw all the weight you want in there, but if the weigh master has a bug in his behind, he'll scale you and if you are over you GVWR...or you GAWR, your toast.
Reply:Like opie stated, check your rating. It should be around 3,000 as mine is rated up in that area. I'll check Edmunds for you...John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Is it a W200 or W300?  3/4 ton are usually 8600 GVW and one ton are 11,000 GVW.  You know what your truck weighs, so take it from there.  I have Ranger 250, 5 hp gas air compressor, 5 80 cf tanks and a tool box with leads and rod in it.  All this weighs about 1200 Lbs.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Lets see, tanks could get up to lets say 800 lbs, welder.. 1230lbs (picked you out the lincoln vantage 400 perkins) unless its a italian esab then its 1000kilo's, wire feeder 30~50lbs, wires and cable no more than 100lbs, lunch box and thermos 10lbs, water bottle 15lbs, slide out welding table with stereo and fridge priceless, naw getting silly.  Looks like you'd be able to load just about any setup on that rig.  3000lbs is alot of stuff.  You might need helper springs to help keep it level though..Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Ok,looked on the door says GAWR Front.4060lbs and GWAR Rear 6084,if those are maximum weights for axles, using LT235/85R160 tires. And the (rear) axle now weighs 2440, that would give me 3644 lbs max with those tires, sound politically correct to you guys?Is that the way you figure it out? I think airbags would benefit the suspensionAnd btw Doolittle, how did you know i was eyeballin that Vantage 400?Also the Invertec 220 pack would work great for the tig. Iwonder if it could power my harmon kardon citation 16 amp? tunes would be rockin then  lol.Music always helps when i dont hear grinders going  lol
Reply:I think you're going to have a hard time finding 3,000 total pounds to fit in there. Load it up with your equipment!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Do you have a local scale house.... gravel pit , transfer station, etc? Take your truck there tell them you want to know your front, rear and total vehicle weights. FIll the truck up with fuel and you will need to include your weight in the truck as well. Then you will know exactly what is what....... this may cost you about 20.00 but it's well worth it._________________Chris

Reply:You will be near max load, but don't forget its always loaded, so some load leveler springs will help keep the truck handling like it should.  Have funDavid
Reply:If you don't mind spending the money for it, a set of Firestone helper airbags will do a better job than helper springs. They'll keep it level without affecting the ride as much whether you're loaded or empty.
Reply:Well thanks alot for your help guys, appreciated and hopefully i could help someone out here too sometime. If this question arises again, got an idea how to help now.
