Reply:Im more curious as to what the tolerances/abilities of my machine is. Im sure some other idiots (like me) are curious as well.ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:I think if you check the Miller catalog you will not find the Dynastys rated for that process. You might get away with it and you might ruin it and void the warranty. I reccomend giving Miller a call and talking to the tig application guys before trying this.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:Emailed Miller yesterday and they called me today. They dont recommend Carbon Arc on ANY of their TIG machines (and especially any inverters). Not a one. They elaborately explained that they have other machines to do that. Funny thing was that it wont void the warranty...was describing that the machine will safeguard and turn off if something goes wrong. So, what am I missing?Carbon rod, some compressed air, and turn up the juice?ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:-standard warning applies, your mileage may vary, may kill your machine...blah blah blah -I've whittled up some car parts with a 200dx and some 6011 rod. that uses a rod up pretty quick at 150 - 170 amp. fired up the carbon rod... ( rod only, no air ) at the same current. The fan came on in the welder, got rid of some hot air, and then shut off. I would imagine that day in - day out (ab)use such as this would result in a molten pile of what was once a welder, but staying under the duty cycle shouldn't hurt it.Of course... if I had enough power to run the Hobart TR250... oh yea, not a problem.
Reply:Carbon arc gouging really does a number on a machine..... if it is not a recommended process for that machine DON"T DO IT. I think I'd look at buying an inexpensive DC Lincoln tombstone as a dedicated carbon arc machine...... a small investment as compared to another 200DX._________________Chris

Reply:I agree with Lorenzo but if you must here is some inside info on sizes and required amperage, and if you look at some of the small rods you can airarc with as little as 100 amps.http://www.weldingmaterialsales.com/...roductpage.htm |
