I have a Miller XMT 300 CC machine, and currently it's set up for just stick welding.  Lately, I've had the opportunity to do more TIG welding at work (just enough to make me dangerous!), and I think I want to get set up for TIG at home, as well.  I already have a water cooled torch that I could use.  Now - if it was you - would you go out and buy an air cooled torch and call it good?  Will it do everything that a water cooled torch will?  OR, would you make up a water cooler and go that route?  By the way, my well water is not suitable for use as a constant flow source (very high salt content).  Any and all suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks!
Reply:I'd probably start with an air cooled torch. Not real pricey, and less hassle. Comfortable up to maybe 120A, for me. If you find the need to do higher current work, then go for the water cooler.A cooler isn't that tough to build, but you need a good pump, should use a filter, a flow indicator, something to cut the current if coolant flow stops (often a fusable link cooled by the water flow), a relief valve, a radiator, and a reservoir. Making one IS a project, though not a huge one. You can get by with less, but I wouldn't recommend it, other than dropping the radiator if the reservoir has enough surface area to do the job.
Reply:were it me, I'd try to build or buy a cooler.  since you already have the torch.of course, could buy an air cooled torch.  With a small sub pump, one could make a water cooler pretty easily.  ( I got lucky and found a carbonator pump being tossed out behind a restraunt the other day. )
Reply:Once you use a watercooled torch you will forget about all other options.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Well, I use a water-cooled torch at work.  But I've never used an air-cooled one, so I didn't know if there was that big a difference or not.  I also knew that if I were going the water route, that I had to have a reservoir - more dead floor space when you're using it, and a place to store it when you're not.  BUT, it looks like that's the way I'll be going.  Now, time to search out some cooler plans!
