I am getting ready to attempt a job, welding cracks in a copper electrode used in a steel mill. Has anyone ever welded copper? Can you give me some advice, and/or some specs as to what kind of wire and/or electrode. Should I preheat? anything u can tell me would really help. Since I know nothing at all about welding copper. Thanks for the help
Reply:I would suggest going to www.ampcometal.com and check out the info on Copr-Trode filler metal. I think they have the largest selection of Aluminum-Bronze, Silicon-Bronze, and Copper material. They also have good tech info! Hope this helps!!----------john
Reply:I think with copper, you need all the heat you can get. I dont think preheat will help much. Do a search for copper. Either pulser or Lorenzo welded some tubing up as an experiment. He tiged it and it looked really nice. Sounds like you might be working on a huge chunk of the stuff though (I have no idea what kind of electrode the steel mill would use).
