I am wanting to put weld stake side supports to the side of my trailer, I want to use channel iron with inside dimensions so that 2 X 4 lumber can fit in them. My question is what size channel iron would this be to allow a upright 2 x 4?? thanks
Reply:Most common c shapes are somewhat tapered on the inside corners. Not real true to form for what you're wanting. It's measured by it's depth (web) and weight so I'm not sure just what would be common and fit your needs. I've got some 4"x 5.4 lb that's maybe close to 3 1/2 by 1 1/4 on the inside. There is a rolled/stamped channel out there but it's not real common. I do believe you can order weldable stake pockets tho. Don't have a clue on the price.

Reply:I have yet to find a channel that I could cut up and make stake pockets out of. I always end up making them out of flat stock.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:the channel iron will work for pockets, 4 in should be fine for a 2x4 but when you weld them on, gap the legs about 1/8 to 3/16 in order to leave enough room for the 2x4 to slip between the rail and the channel iron. This also makes it easier to get a hook from a chain down through if using chains to tie something down.
