Hi there, a friend has come to me with a muffler from a golf cart which has been cut with a grinder into pieces to access the broken flange inside. The grinder has removed 1/16"+ of metal. I'm looking for some help on how to fill these gaps to make it fit back together properly, if I just buttweld all the pieces will be that much shorter and not fit together. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Can I put a brazing rod or something like that in the gap?
Reply:1/16 is not much of a gap to worry about.... how are you welding it? what process?_________________Chris
Reply:sorry should've put in first post, I'm using a Lincoln 175plus mig machine. gap is at least 1/16 some spots a little more
Reply:Fill it with the MIG - dap a few tacks on each side and build them up. Here is a pic of a simple illustration I did for a guy on his gas tank.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:thank you , this site has been alot of help for a guy new to welding last fall, thanx again
Reply:Welcome - give that a shot and let us know how it works out. Just give the material a quick ZAP - don't stay on it too long or you'll burn through.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:And yes, you can use a filler or a patch.
Reply:I'll definetly let you know how it turns out, also the broken flange is very thin so I'm going to try .020 wire and the lowest setting my m/c has
Reply:last post should've said .025 wire |
