Hey guys,I'm working on a project right now for the wife because she saw something that looked cool and now wants one but customized (its an attachment that goes on each end of a picnic table for camping that has an overhead span across the table to hold lights, includes a shelf, etc.).  I want to make it out of square tubing using slip joints with pins for adjustability. The question is most of the larger square tubing that I've purchased in the past (I believe) is cold formed and seam welded together.  The inside of the tubing is not square but instead is sort of concaved on each side.  So smaller pipe doesn't slide into it very well without having to do some serious grinding on the outside of the piece that slips inside.  I've seen square tubing on retail stuff like weight lifting equipment frames that can slip joint without having to press or compress the ends to where you just jam it into the other piece.  Is there a special term for the kind of pipe that I need to be asking for that will allow this.  The wall thickness can be 1/16 or less for that matter since it won't need to be too strong. My problem is knowing what to ask for,ie Hot rolled, Cold Finished, Extruded, Welded etc.  Am I making this too difficult.  I would think there is market for different size square tubing that easily slips inside (snugly) a large size up.Michael
Reply:Ask them for cold rolled D.O.M. tubing..Drawn Over Mandrel..No seams and very "square"  You'll like it!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Some suppliers will have od/id tube, in both square and round. Check IMS. They had some. It was more a project material vs. a structural material.
Reply:Rojo,Who is IMS??Zap,Thanks, that makes sense if the use a mandrel then I would assume it holds its shape.  I don't need alot of heft just a nice fit where one slides inside of another.  So far, I have not been able to find a local supplier that has or knows what I am talking about that is why I was looking for the terminology to speak the supplier's language.ThanksMichael

Reply:Thanks Rojo,I will check them out and see if I can find what I need.Michael
Reply:In the thin wall tubing you can ask for "crew tube".  For thicker sections ask for a "FR" designation, (flash removed). Trailer hitch recievers use this stuff so the insert will fit nice.Man invented metal, he can do whatever he wants with it.KMAC
Reply:Kmac....good information.  I actually found this stuff on allied'd site and it would be perfect for my application.http://www.alliedtube.com/pdf/squarefit.pdfGreat info guys.Michael
