Have to make dozer repairs on the cross beam of JD 350, parts in question normally bolt together but have become oblong and holes are shot from being loose and neglected. Owner does not want to totally disassemble to fix right, dealer says they generally weld them when they are like this. Would anyone know if 7018 is OK for welding Cast Steel to Mild Carbon steel. It not what do you suggest?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:kolotNo worries at all for 7018 cast steel to MS. No advantage will be gained though. It won't be any stronger than ordinary MS electrodes say 6013, as your MS parent metals have a lower tensile strength than the 7018.Grahame
Reply:7018 is the way to go. You will find cat uses good steel and cast steel. VEE the crap out of it.... Go Deep.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Plan is to hit it with the carbon arc first , grind clean and come back out and build up as well. Reply:David R Is right. I have had good luck on CAT'S steel, and have done that job a few times myself. You have the right idea. I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:JD350 Woot! I welded my broke cross member at a shop, we ground, cleaned and made multi-passes on it, looked very good. Stick AC, 7018 rods. Broke again after a few hours working in the woods clearing over logs and that's hardest on it.Back to the shop. (I'm tired of loading and hauling PacMan by now.) Ground, cleaned, twice the number of passes covering more area and buildup. AC and 7018s again. It's still intact after ~300 more hours on it. We got our alignments better the second time around i think too.I just said that because our dozers go through an unbelievable amount of stress over logs and stumps, so weld extra extra strength. (I'd take pix of weld but crawling under is a little tight too.)Last edited by RexB; 04-19-2007 at 10:24 AM.
Reply:I've welded up broken track rails on my dad's old J D 440 crawler & track cleats on his D-2 cat with 7018 D C with a lincoln sa-250 . works best , after grinding clean and PRE-Heating . the cleats(cut to length from stock) have to be tacked very quickly after the preheat , & then start welding immediately ,so as to NOT have the tacks crack. No trouble ,after I realized that . Cat dealer said use 80-18, but it cost a lot more , and we never had any trouble with the 70-18.That was a while ago, at the time I worked for Kaiser steel, and was able to buy it for their cost =28 cents a pound , tax included ! (70-18 5/32" )Ah, the good ole days !.......................correction, it was 24.97 cents a pound .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:Thanks for the tips guys, I know what has to be done ,now I have to convince myself to crawl under that puppy and warm it up. Cut a pickup in half this weekend and spliced a new rear clip in for my brother in law. lined up real well and looks surprisingly good."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:kolot, i had a similar problem on the clam bucket of a cat rubber tire hoe. i had to re-weld the hinge to it. er70s-6 or 7018 DCEN should do fine. heat to 500 deg F, and maintain 400 deg F on the interpass. peen the welds between passes. except for the cover pass. post heat a little and wrap in a spark blanket or heat shield. our new hinge came in 2 months ago, and it is still sitting in my gangebox waiting for the reapir to break. seems to be holding. thank lorenzo if it works, he was the one who recommended this to me and now i swear by it on my cast steel products."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it |
